Species-dense genomics through natural history collections - Nature Reviews Genetics
Large-scale genome initiatives are transforming biodiversity genomics, but genomes remain taxonomically sparse and difficult to compare across species. Kapli and colleagues argue that natural history ...

1/11 🐟 2nd new preprint today from @chasedbrownstein.bsky.social We investigated how losing the swim bladder, the organ that most fishes use to control their buoyancy, has shaped the diversity of ray-finned fishes over 90 million years of Earth history. The results surprised us. 🧵

The Genome-Wide Effect of Drift and Selection over a Single Generation
The relative importance of genetic drift versus selection to evolutionary change has long been debated. This debate has mainly focused over long-time-scales (e.g. hundreds of thousands of generations)...

A really cool preprint from Joanna Wysocka's lab showing that housekeeping genes use distal enhancers as dosage buffers against TF fluctuations, but only during critical cell fate transitions. Makes so much sense! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Enhancer buffering protects dosage-sensitive housekeeping genes during vulnerable developmental transitions
Housekeeping genes maintain robust expression across cell types despite dynamic transcription factor fluctuations, yet their haploinsufficiency is associated with many tissue-specific developmental di...

The broader story of disconnect between leadership and the people doing the day-to-day work feels familiar. The Academy was built by generations of aquarists, scientists, educators, and volunteers who cared enormously about what they did. Very depressing.

There are almost no crustaceans in the deep ocean. Not because they would get crushed, but because they would DISSOLVE. The cold & high pressure cause changes to water that make it very corrosive to calcium carbonate shells. But there's one crustacean who solves this problem with ALUMINUM ARMOR.

To clarify the scope: we didn’t test GS–TE relationships ourselves, but we discuss animal studies showing that GS differences often reflect lineage-specific TE dynamics not predicted by Ne (e.g., elifesciences.org/articles/100...; link.springer.com/article/10.1...).

Hello Bluesky! Does Nₑ really explain mutation rate (μ) or genome size (GS) in vertebrates? We find the apparent Nₑ–μ link in Bergeron et al. (2023) is a “back-door” path via generation time, and GS is decoupled from both Nₑ and life-history traits. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... #evobio #PNAS
