When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Our history majors find jobs, & we have a fab internship program that helps them gain professional experience while in college. More humanities departments need to place students in internships &/or prepare them for grad school (another path many take). I work w/former history majors often in RVA.

The double whammy here: humanities majors find jobs & the skills they learn are incredibly valuable—esp now in our distracted world saturated w/AI slop. But fear keeps them away from our classes. Fear of reading and writing. I want students to enjoy the pleasures of a book that changes their world.

Brooke Newman @brookenewman.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Why? Concerns about jobs and the reading load. “Traditionally, the coursework for those majors require students to read high volumes of material. ‘Many students just don’t feel comfortable with long-form reading that they’d do in an English or history class.’” www.insidehighered.com/news/student...

The paper trail of complicity and profit, both royal and otherwise, stretches across the centuries—and historians are there to find it. Great work by Nick Radburn, Will Pettigrew, and team, who have launched a comprehensive register of British investors in the transatlantic slave trade.
