I just want to add that this is directly being funded by American conservative groups (The Heritage Foundation & The Family) who are not satisfied with controlling people in their own country, and have been on a mission enact their agenda in other nations with weak or nascent governance.

There is no good answer here. Society is getting upended in multiple ways from multiple directions. EVs remain clearly the best option moving forward but a lot is required to make them palatable and adoptable in all situations. Expense is only one dimension, and most of the others are political.

Younger folks can’t reasonably afford (universally expensive) new vehicles, and older folks can afford nicer vehicles. The used market is pretty good for filling that niche. There’s also still a bunch of range anxiety about evs and the infrastructure buildout sucks because it’s been kneecapped.

If you don’t advertise, and you name your car line one letter off another car you also produce, and it costs about as much as the base model of the competition when it’s on sale, and it’s not as good of a car, and it’s a GM… Yeah, it’s probably about a lack of a us market for cheap evs.

When you get famous enough that gambling companies (incl. crypto, stock market, etc.) come calling, asking for promotions, you lose any and all coolness if you accept. Loud rejection improves coolness, however. If you encourage people who have nearly nothing to lose more, you suck. You just suck.

(We’ll not go into the amount of compute this effort requires, or how this is roughly indistinguishable from fuzzing and pen testing, both of which were good practice right up until they weren’t because the investment didn’t align with the risk. Which - guess what - now it does. I guess.)

It’s weird only inasmuch as there are competing blackhat operations worldwide, so this is arguably the ‘best’ option, but if we were a sane country we would treat this as a state-sponsored threat and either create a free alternative or compel it to be free from the source.
