Thrilled to share this preprint from my PhD thesis. The research is more than iPhone lidar’s exciting ability to capture fine-scale vegetation - it’s a step towards making remote sensing more accessible for myself and others 📱🌿

What a buzzing time at #EcoNet2025! Was thrilled to get to share some of my PhD work and to meet so many lovely researchers! Thanks so much to all the organizers. @foragingecology.bsky.social with a strong showing and a prize winning talk by @beatricedale.bsky.social 🐝🌳

Was such a great chance to see scanners that I hadn’t before! And to ask the questions about walking patterns that haunted me during post-processing…. #Connectedbytrees

Last drone flights of my PhD! ✨ The weather at the Hepple Estate was absolutely perfect until the last four lines when a thunderstorm started to roll in… can’t beat the British weather 🤣. Thanks so much to @jordancuff.bsky.social for bringing himself and his positive attitude to uplift the day!

Had to stop to say hi to the Highland Coos at Hepple Whitefield Hall. What a gorgeous place to get to do fieldwork!

I just briefed an international group of military officials on the importance of permafrost thaw to national and international security. We cannot talk about resilience of climate, food, infrastructure, energy, or governance without thinking about permafrost. Thaw is often rapid and irreversible.

This next Canadian election will be the most pivotal in our lifetime. Please critically compare the behaviour of politicians before and after the election in the US and consider how the same story is playing out in Canada. #CanadaElection2025

The woodpasture at Hepple Wilds really was showing off its early spring best for laser scanning! Can’t wait to return with @jordancuff.bsky.social in the summer for a final set of 🌳🕷️🪻data for my PhD. So excited for the collaboration as part of my work with @foragingecology.bsky.social

Classic selfie with the Zeb Horizon scanner! My arms still hurt from the number of scans I did across the area, but the lidar data should be great to compare with my previous iPhone scans and UAV mapping!

Could not have asked for better weather to laser scan the trees at the Hepple Estate yesterday!

Prepping for fieldwork tomorrow at Hepple Estate’s woodpasture! Here’s hoping it’s not as late of work days as last year, but it did make for a stunning photo! #Northumberland

Introduction time! Hi, I’m Broghan a PhD student at @newcastleuni.bsky.social 🇨🇦in🇬🇧 I study 🌳 #carbon and 🪻 #biodiversity in UK #agroforestry systems. A particular focus is on remote sensing of structural and multispectral diversity of vegetation as they relate to foraging ecology.

Hello all ☺️ I start new accounts with a quote that’s meaningful to me: “Loyalty and obedience to wisdom and justice are fine; but it is still finer to defy arbitrary power, unjustly and cruelly used–not on behalf of ourselves, but on behalf of others more helpless.” - Elizabeth Gaskell #ethics
