Two innovations. Two different approaches. One shared goal: transforming medicine. CAR-T GLP-1 While the science is fundamentally different, both innovations share something: they transformed our understanding of human biology. #BMIA #CARTCellTherapy #Immunotherapy #GLP1 #Obesity #CancerResearch
Two innovations. Two very different approaches. One shared goal: transforming medicine.

In 2025, the Broermann Medical Innovation Award honored the pioneers of CAR-T cell therapy, Prof. Carl June & Prof. Michel Sadelain. This groundbreaking approach harnesses and genetically reprograms a patient’s own immune cells to recognize and fight cancer.

In 2026, the award recognized Prof. Richard DiMarchi, Prof. Svetlana Mojsov & Prof. Matthias H. Tschöp for pioneering work that helped unlock the therapeutic potential of GLP-1 and advanced a new generation of treatments for obesity and type 2 diabetes.

CAR-T → harnessing the immune system to fight cancer

GLP-1 → harnessing metabolic biology to treat metabolic disease

While the science is fundamentally different, both innovations share something essential: they transformed our understanding of human biology into new possibilities for patient care.

This is what the Broermann Medical Innovation Award celebrates: groundbreaking science that changes what medicine can achieve.

Which medical innovation do you think could define the next decade?

Our mission has been to award projects that save lives As Prof. June says, “The journey of CAR-T is a story of persistence, of radical collaboration and, most importantly, of the profound courage of the patients who enroll in our trials. #innovation #cancercure #cancerresearch #cartcelltherapy
As we enjoy the first rays of sunshine and the beginning of spring, let´s take a look at our 2025 BMIA laureates' innovative research and why CAR-T cells precisely convey what our award stands for.

Our mission has been to award projects that save people's lives or have the potential to do so.

As Prof. June says, “The journey of CAR-T is a story of persistence, of radical collaboration and, most importantly, of the profound courage of the patients who enroll in our trials.
The prize isn’t just for two individuals; it’s a testament to a collective, often arduous scientific journey into the power of collaboration.”

We are looking forward to recognizing more innovative scientists in the years to come.

When choosing the physical symbol of the BMIA, we explored several ideas and chose a medal. A timeless mark of achievement. Built to last. Rooted in scientific tradition. A universal symbol of excellence. Know a scientist who deserves this recognition? www.broermann-award.org/nomination/
Why the Broermann Medical Innovation Award is represented by a medal

When it came time to choose a physical symbol for the Broermann Medical Innovation Award (BMIA), we explored several ideas — a trophy, a cup, or a medal.
After much thought and discussion, we decided on a gilded medal with a representative diameter, housed in a classic dark case.

But why a medal? What makes it the right symbol for everything the BMIA stands for?

A timeless mark of achievement

Medals have always stood for excellence, courage, and achievement that lasts. They celebrate work that goes beyond one moment in time — just like the BMIA, which honors research that truly changes medical care and improves lives.

Built to last

Money can be spent, and trophies can date with time — but a medal endures. It can be treasured, displayed, and even passed on. That permanence reflects our mission: to honor medical innovations that make a lasting difference for patients today and for generations to come.

Rooted in tradition

Since the 19th century, medals have been the classic way to recognize groundbreaking contributions in science, culture, and society. With this award, we’re continuing that proud tradition — celebrating excellence that advances human knowledge and well-being.

A universal symbol

No matter where you go in the world, a medal instantly says “achievement.” It needs no translation. That universality reflects the spirit of the BMIA — an international award that connects and honors the global community of medical innovators.

Do you know a scientist whose research deserves this recognition?

It started with one child & an impossible challenge.

When six-year-old Emily Whitehead was diagnosed with leukemia that no treatment could stop, Carl June & his team at the University of Pennsylvania believed there was another way.
