Anyway, this seems like a pretty big step down from Brioni, especially for someone who's been making billions off shitcoins and general graft.

Grew up 5 minutes from their original headquarters. Lots of folks that used to run sewing machines for decades were suddenly looking for new jobs back in the 90s. They made some pretty decent stuff prior.

What's on your bookshelf that the Internet Archive doesn't have? There's an app for that. Scan a book's barcode or ISBN to see whether the Internet Archive needs it for preservation and digitization. Scan your shelves. Save a book. help.archive.org/help/donate-... 🧵
Four "Tools You Can Use" Upload campaign tiles arranged in a 2x2 grid. Top right, a cream tile with bold black text: "Upload digital materials to help preserve and share knowledge with people around the world." Bottom left, a cream tile with a screenshot of the Internet Archive's Upload files page, with the "UPLOAD" nav link and "Choose files to upload" button circled in red. Trump’s new AI website is kinda fun, it turns out.
Can the president use taxpayer funds to air his old campaign ads on TV?

No. Federal appropriations law has long barred using taxpayer funds for political advertising.

The biggest ask Obama ever made of Americans was to imagine a health care system that sucked slightly less, and still a substantial portion of the country has never forgiven him for it.

My mom would decide pretty quickly after this that I needed a cell phone. I came back from Fall break with that, and my dad also took me to the Target near campus to pick up a TV set before he dropped me off. These may have been my birthday presents for that year; I certainly didn't have any money.

* Scott and his sibling(s) had just given their parents a gift cert to Windows On The World for their anniversary, which was a hundred bucks that he wryly observed he wouldn't be seeing again. (This was not a major concern of his, just a small irony on a fucked-up day)

brockmeyer.bsky.social @brockmeyer.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
The only other relevant things I recall are: * There were (fairly ridiculous, in hindsight?) rumors that maybe the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center was on the possible target list, that it was under military guard, etc. I didn't know of anyone who actually walked the 3 blocks to check.

Eventually, a guy from my hometown, who was a year ahead of me at my high school (Scott), invited me over to hang out with him and his buddies at his frat. We processed events very briefly, got drunk on boxed wine, and watched The Crow. I stumbled back to my dorm and passed out.

* Killed a bunch more time on my computer (maybe this is when I found time to eat). Might have made some more phone calls as well.

(I probably got some kind of lunch at some point but I don't really recall). * Watched some more CNN with Evan, Frank, and the growing crowd, until they got sick of it (we were well into the "endless replays, no new information" phase of the day) and kicked everyone out.

brockmeyer.bsky.social @brockmeyer.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
* Wandered aimlessly for a little while, which it seemed like a lot of people were doing at that moment. Ended up passing by the campus chapel, where Catholic daily mass happened to be going on (I was raised Catholic). I stopped in and participated in that, and then headed back to the dorms.

brockmeyer.bsky.social @brockmeyer.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
* No university-wide email had gone out yet (and I was a dumb kid who couldn't guess the answer) so I set out across campus to see whether I still had a calculus quiz or not. Quickly ran into a classmate coming the other direction who let me know that, of course, everything was cancelled for the day

(Everyone was fine, but I would later learn that it took my dad about 6 hours to drive home to northern MD that night) * Because I was on the phone, I didn't see the second tower come down live, but I heard everyone next door react to it. Got off the phone, went back over and caught the replay.
100
brockmeyer.bsky.social @brockmeyer.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
* Tried to work the phones to make sure everyone was OK at home, especially my dad, who was working at the Watergate at that time. I didn't have a cellphone yet, and the landlines out of campus were all tied up, so this was the first time I used VOIP (Dialpad, which was brand new at the time).

I'm thinking it was some kind of accident, she doesn't think so. * headed over to see the guys next door (Frank and Evan, who would become some of my best friends at college) -- they had one of the few TVs on our floor. Watched the first tower come down live, then rushed out to contact my family.

My day 25 years ago, as a 17yo college freshman in Pittsburgh: * Roll out of bed late and hop on my computer, as was my habit, to find some freaked out messages on AIM from my high school friend Maureen, who was in DC attending AU. Something bad is going on, there is smoke coming from the Pentagon.

I think Hunter S. Thompson's column in the immediate aftermath pretty much nailed it www.espn.com/espn/page2/s...
The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. Osama bin Laden may be a primitive "figurehead" -- or even dead, for all we know -- but whoever put those All-American jet planes loaded with All-American fuel into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon did it with chilling precision and accuracy. The second one was a dead-on bullseye. Straight into the middle of the skyscraper. This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed -- for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won't hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force.

Good luck. He is in for a profoundly difficult job -- armed as he is with no credible Military Intelligence, no witnesses and only the ghost of Bin Laden to blame for the tragedy.
OK. It is 24 hours later now, and we are not getting much information about the Five Ws of this thing.

The numbers out of the Pentagon are baffling, as if Military Censorship has already been imposed on the media. It is ominous. The only news on TV comes from weeping victims and ignorant speculators.

The lid is on. Loose Lips Sink Ships. Don't say anything that might give aid to The Enemy.
