Yeah
Intellectuals and manufactured problems

The greater a persons knowledge of political and economic facts, the more sensitive and vulnerable is his judgment. Intellectuals are most easily reached by propaganda, particularly if it employs ambiguity. The reader of a number ol newspapers expressing diverse attitude — just because he is better informed - is more subjected than anyone else to a propaganda that he cannot perceive, even though he claims to retain free choice in the mastery of all this information.

Definitely a product of post WWII society but I’d LOVE to know what he’d think about modern social media (although I could harbor a guess or two).
...modern man does not think about current problems; he feels them. He reacts, but he does not understand them any more than he takes responsibility for them. He is even less capable of spotting any inconsistency between successive facts; man's capacity to forget is unlimited. This is one of the most important and useful points for the propagandist, who can always be sure that a particular propaganda theme, statement, or event will be forgotten within a few weeks.

I really think more people should read Jacques Ellul’s “Propaganda: the Formation of Men’s Attitudes.” It’s so good.
The person who imagined that he could not be the victim of propaganda because he could distinguish truth from falsehood, is extremely susceptible to propaganda, because when propaganda does tell the truth, he is then convinced that it is no longer propaganda: moreover, his self-confidence makes him all the more vulnerable to attacks of which he is unaware.

Finally, Rhonda, well-known WSB Resident Idiot, also plans to oppose paid parking by punishing local businesses. How very neighborly of her! A real West Seattle hero.
Rhonda September 30, 2026 (4:23 pm) Reply
Now I’ll just shop at Westwood Village, White Center, and Burien plus the Admiral area and any Junction business with a parking lot like Trader Joe’s, QFC, Safeway, and Whole Foods. But no more California Avenue Junction retailers.

"Alki Resident," a regular NIMBY in WSB comments, also seems to be thiiiiis close to realizing they're not happy here and should probably move out! They'll gladly pay for the extra gas it takes to drive elsewhere for "free parking spots." That makes lots of sense. Also: "small town?"
Alki resident September 30, 2026 (4:25 pm) Reply
Yes exactly. Say goodbye to our small town. Can’t run around and shop or eat around here without dipping into our pockets. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying eating and shopping outside of Seattle for a few years. What attracts me is the easy and free parking spots and cheaper restaurant bills. Great food and service without breaking the bank. This metering is really my final straw patronizing the junction. Not to mention the frequent attacks on citizens and no security.

Perhaps they can use the avenue to create more bike lanes in West Seattle.

Patty R September 30, 2026 (4:13 pm) Reply
HELL NO!!! Make traffic and safety worse. Start to make bikers have a biking license (pay a yearly fee) and pay for the bike improvements to the roads, and a plate on their bike to report the very bad unsafe riders that are a hazard on our streets. Cars have plate to identify so should bikes.

Sally September 30, 2026 (2:41 pm) Reply
In my opinion having people pay for parking will not help you find parking in front or close to where you are wanting to go. As a person who has tried to find parking on the Main Street in the junction for the past 40 plus years it’s actually a rarity that I can actually find parking.

Erik September 30, 2026 (1:28 pm) Reply
Shocker. We all called the money grab before it happened. I already find it a pain to go to the junction. Guess I’ll just go elsewhere and not frequent the businesses because paying to park is just a freaking scam at this point.

Jim September 30, 2026 (3:41 pm) Reply
And the rate is absolutely ridiculous! And limited to only 2 hours good luck having a nice dinner or party get together and then even if you pay and the paid lots you might still get a ticket

I love all of the WSB commenters who are reacting to this by swearing to never visit the Junction again. Like, Eric here sounds like he'd be better served by moving to a different neighborhood!
Eric1 September 30, 2026 (3:10 pm) Reply
It isn’t that the Junction will actually cease to exist – it will still be there. It is just the shops and people patronizing the Junction that change. There is a Bakery Nouveau in Burien (which I went to today) to buy a cake. I haven’t eaten in the Junction probably since right after Covid. Lots of the classic restaurants are actually still around. Kamei Japanese Restaurant is now in Tacoma/Lakewood (went to visit them) and Mashiko is in White Center. While my job keeps me in the city of Seattle, it makes it easier to avoid spending money in Seattle if you want to charge me for the privilege.

Commenter on the West Seattle Blog echoing the local legacy media's deranged and misogynist attacks on Mayor Wilson: "I made up something imaginary about her that I find deeply concerning. Also, she's an icky woman who I don't think is pretty." What a POS.
I read this as things having gotten so bad with the business community – just today Mod Pizza pulled out of Seattle entirely – that Wilson was forced to do a budget that had no new taxes and fully funded the police department. You can tell by her comments that she’s just itching to do a local capital gains tax (the point of which escapes me as we have one at the state level already – why punish people twice?). True progress would be repealing the JumpStart Tax and restoring the investment credits that the tech industry used to take off in the 90s.I’m incredibly underwhelmed by Wilson as a whole. Not just because of her politics but the way she presents herself. Mandami in NYC probably has many of the same opinions but the guy has charm and charisma to space. Wilson is more a policy wond/nerdy type who doesn’t seem to understand that optics (how you dress, not blinking a mile a minute and saying “um” or “uh” everyone word during interviews) matter.

They provide a handy-dandy way for people to contact their Councilmembers on every bill they pass. Would be a shame if local progressives used this to show their support for progressive causes.
Seattle's far-progressive electeds keep lighting fires: shutting down CCTV cameras, blocking addiction treatment, taxing job creators out of the city. The Firehose is for putting them out. A bill tracker and weekly alert on what happened in committee and why you need to care about it now, with one-click ways to do something before the final vote, not after the consequences sink in: email your Councilmember, post the receipts, pitch an op-ed.

Holy shit this is SO BAD.
There's a shortage of media outlets representing the moderate middle in Seattle. The Seattle Times is blocked by a paywall. Local broadcast news has its moments, but who watches TV? The Stranger runs far-left and the cheat-sheet gets the last word. Everything in between is hit-or-miss at best, or a podcast nobody listens to. Meanwhile, TikTok is taken for news. The pragmatic majority has been polite for so long we forgot how to be loud. We're done being nice.

SeaFor aggregates coverage of current hot topics, shining a spotlight on thorough reporting from a range of perspectives. And we publish original commentary that pokes fun at the opinion pretending to be fact. Witty, sarcastic, sourced, and designed to generate views. The moderate middle can be loud and opinionated. We will not roll over.

I love this passive-aggressive (very heavily AI) "About" page (and how clearly egregious the site's agenda is):
This is all about putting out legislative dumpster fires and mobilizing air cover for Councilmembers taking hard votes. We back outcomes‑focused governance on the issues that impact people’s daily lives: public safety; homelessness; housing; addiction; and the City’s fiscal decisions, to name just a few.

Some voices get plenty of airtime at City Hall while others barely make it into the room. CivicTide broadens that conversation. Our weekly rundown tracks legislation from introduction through committee to final vote, what people are saying about it, and when votes are scheduled so you can watch or weigh in. CivicTide’s policy briefs dig into the details of significant bills and explain how their implementation could impact regular Seattleites and small businesses, with links to supporting documents to check for yourself and positions you’re free to disagree with.

I made a personal $10,000 contribution to Let's Go Washington because I supported its income-tax initiative, I-645. I did not adequately investigate or account for the organization's full agenda. When I learned about the other initiatives they were funding I asked for and received a refund of my donation. I have always believed in and supported LGBTQ+ rights.
To help mitigate the harm I have caused, I have donated $10,000 to No Hate in Washington State to stop these appalling initiatives from being passed. I'm sorry, to the community and to the people who work at Archie McPhee. I am committed to making Archie McPhee a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community to work and shop.
This was my mistake and I take full responsibility.

Makin’ friends on Reddit by suggesting that posting constant panicky breathless updates about every crime in the ‘hood is bad, actually.
Reddit thread:
Me (activitydependent319): Maybe it's just me, but I don't find that these updates every single time there's an incident like this do anything other than stoke fear and toxic back-and-forths in response sections/here. Sure there's a case for avoiding an area because of clear and immediate danger of some kind, but I think these breathless "Crime Bulletins" just make people paranoid and think that our neighborhood is more dangerous than it actually is. I'm not sure I see the point.

My new friend (“PBRStreetGang1979”): It's called reporting the news. If you find it disturbing you can choose to leave your head planted in the sand. Sorry that bullets flying through your community have disturbed your complacency.

Holy f-in' NIMBY brains falling out. ISTFG.
I live in one of these rental houses. New Urbanists are – and I don’t say this lightly – my enemy. To nowhere near the existential degree that the actual MAGA Nazis are, mind you, but my enemies nevertheless. The smug entitlement and arrogance is almost South Park level at this point, and watching the mutual admiration society at Publicola is almost comical (don’t even start me on The Urbanist). Ron Davis getting his know-it-all a** handed to him was one of the happiest political days I’ve had in recent memory.

I think they really believe that their simplistic view of supply and demand helps lower and middle income renters, and speaking as someone who has been on both ends of that scale as a Seattle renter for 40 years they’re dead wrong. Many thanks to the author of this piece for a great summary of what the real world looks like.

I feel like a lot of these people maybe just don't like other people in general? This person, for example, should consider a move to a place without humans. "I hate nice things, therefore nobody should have them. Signed, Scrooge."
WS Blog commenter: "I don’t have any concerns about this specific spot, I do take issue with making streets into something they aren’t. I also am not a fan of all the food service businesses encroaching on sidewalks and streets. It was a great option for businesses during Covid, was the intention that they become permanent? I imagine this is not a popular opinion, I just think they are ugly. Streets are streets, sidewalks are sidewalks, and neither should be used for permanent eating and drinking structures.
