As British in Europe and the3million have consistently argued at meetings of the Specialised Committee on Citizens' Rights there can be no meaningful reset without full and effective implementation of citizens' rights in the Withdrawal Agreement.

It seems that we were right all along. Sweden carried out no information activities to inform UK citizens living in Sweden about the impact of Brexit, their data is not fit for purpose and they have deported far more UK citizens per capita after Brexit than any other EU state. bit.ly/4rhOQIp

Joyce Thomas, a 78 year-old British grandmother lost her appeal against deportation from Sweden in a court hearing this week. We agree with her legal representatives that deporting her is not proportionate, especially as SE did not run an adequate information campaign bit.ly/4wv0LU5

Another cruel case from Sweden of a British citizen facing deportation back to the UK in a week. Mr Mason has lived in Sweden for over 20 years. He moved there to join his son and his Swedish family. He registered when he arrived and then developed dementia before Brexit. bit.ly/4wki765

Another awful WA case from Sweden, which is trying to deport a 78-year old British grandmother who has lived there for over 20 years. SE has refused to inform beneficiaries about their rights, is not applying the core EU principle of proportionality and appeals are rarely allowed. bit.ly/4wmW8vg

BIE has been trying to engage with the Home Office on this topic for a year. We wrote to SoS Yvette Cooper last May and still have not received a written reply. Two recent calls with officials have not got us a grace period so we’ve sent another letter with the3million and ILPA bit.ly/4cOcZ3Q

During the ICE (Inform, Connect, Empower) project volunteer advocates from 11 EU states (AT, BE, CZ, DE, DK, EL, ES, LU, HU, MT, SE) supported hundreds of UK citizens living in the EU to access & defend their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement & the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Last year over 2000 UK Withdrawal Agreement beneficiaries filled out a survey for the BIE ICE project on their experience of the implementation of the WA as beneficiaries in the EU. We have now published a report on the findings. Generally, implementation is going well but bit.ly/4nEVXIe

The UK Migration Advisory Committee has issued its report on the minimum income rule which affects UK citizens who fall in love with non-UK or Irish citizens. Of course, we are citizens and not migrants, but the MAC report is supportive of the thousands of UKinEEA/CH with non UK family members.

Five years ago today the UK left the EU. Two days earlier British in Europe was present in the European Parliament along with our friends from the3million to witness the historic vote that sealed our fate.
