An excerpt from an essay on Back to the Future:

Marty is a time-traveling pilgrim, then, but not quite Vonnegut's kind. Billy Pilgrim comes unstuck and suffers; time happens to him, and he drifts through it with the passivity of a man watching his own life from a train window. Marty comes unstuck and is handed a to-do list. And the work he's sent to do-the fabrication of a
better yesterday, for a new tomorrow-turns out to demand, like all fabrication, the consumption of raw material. Somebody's timeline gets fed to the furnace. The past is not a place you return to but a thing you build, at cost, and generally on someone else's back.

And so it goes.

"THE FABELMANS is not a coming-of-age story. There is no answer. It isn’t a parable or lesson or meditation. Instead it reflects, renders in real time, its creator’s relationship to his memories." www.brightwalldarkroom.com/2023/01/17/a...

A wonderful read in every possible way…
“I said in an earlier interview that I did with you that Roger was not just a man, and he was not just a critic; he was an idea. He is an idea. He exists in the present tense. And Roger's core idea is that the world doesn't begin and end with you. Other people exist, and you should care about them, even if you've never met them. You should try to understand them even if you didn't know they existed five minutes ago.

That's the basic building block of civilization. There are many people, including many colleagues in my profession, who think that's sentimental.
They think it's corny. They think it's cringe. And it's not. It's the purpose of art, and it's the purpose of life.”

if ethan hawke doesn’t win the oscar can we at least give him the thank you for being alive award?
ethan hawke in an interview saying “Go to Pullman City, Germany. It's like a zoo set for Earthlings.” we’d give you more context but there really isn’t any, other than that ethan hawke is wonderfulethan hawke explaining something by making a holding-a-video-camera motion with his hands and saying “All right, we start in the cat. We're going to come off the cat and then…”ethan hawke playing air guitar and saying “This is like I’m Gen X, so this is like…”

“Nothing in the world can be compared to the human face. It is a land one can never tire of exploring. There is no greater experience…than to witness the expression of a sensitive face under the mysterious power of inspiration. To see it animated from inside, and turning into poetry.” -Carl Dreyer
