Spoon Shop raised £109.03 for The Cellar Trust this week and BrightAire Towers is significantly diminished of spoons. I wonder how long until I've sufficient spoon stock to reopen.

Yes. I've heard it's pretty mediocre stuff. I don't drink if myself. The beer from SALT (also just down the road from me) is much better - www.saltbeerfactory.co.uk

I remember this being read to us, during carpet time, at nursery school and having to take myself off to the back of the classroom to play with the toys. Chilling.

Due to other commitments (mainly other sorts of fun - spa, sauna, spoon club) I've not started my #coffeeneuring journey yet. I'll have to get cracking at the weekend.

Out to Settle today with my students and Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust to establish a tree nursery. Bringing on willow to re-wood the Dales. With an eye on my Outdoor Therapist course, I asked my students about the restorative quality of #WildService activity.

It *could* be the case that the CAZ's work is done and the trajectory of emissions is now acceptably downward due to the increasing prevalence of EVs. That'd be a reasoned position but Reform's is pure culture war. I'd like to see the focus shift to congestion charging but it won't under Reform.

I'm running a PAYF Spoon Shop at work, in aid of The Cellar Trust in Shipley, for World Mental Health Day. I've raised a modest amount of money and had valuable conversations about the role of making stuff and nature connection to support mental health. How're you for spoons?

Latest spoon made from a bent branch of cherry cut from my garden. Quite an extreme crank but perfect for scooping cherry tomato salad out of a ramekin. It's a niche thing.

Like bikes, allegedly, perhaps the correct number of green woodworking tools to have is n+1. 🤔 This lovely Oscar Rush mini adze joined the tool box today.

It's not punishment to deny wealthy people access to resources, provided at public expense, to support the most needy. High earners already benefit from greater access to tax efficient practices. Badenoch is pandering to greed and phony entitlement.

If you dissect an owl pellet, along with vole skulls and mouse fur, it's not uncommon to find a tiara or two.

The Dales have been lovely today. 75km on a bike-based café quest. Moin Moin Bakery in Ilkley for second breakfast. The Wharfe View Tea Room in Burnsall for lunch. Lots of road riding but you can't beat the pop, crunch & spit of gravel and the wet slap of fallen leaves on autumnal trails ATM.
Fingerpost at Five Rise Locks, Bingley.Bolton Bridge on the River Wharfe.Under Addingham footbridge on the Wharfe.Map of today's route.

If not in a National Park, where can we celebrate a car-light view without shiny, metal boxes parked in front of every heritage scene or natural landscape?

BrightAire @brightaire.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
All along the north side of the Wharfe. Ilkley (even from Denton Bridge) to Beamsley. Storiths Lane to Barden Bridge...

It's such a shame that it's almost impossible to enjoy any scenic view, from a roadside, in even a National Park without a car in it. The noise too, on a still & sunny weekend, in the Y3P area it's hard to escape the sound of cars and motorcycles even on the higher fells.

BrightAire @brightaire.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
There are lots of roads in the Dales which would benefit from this. Access restricted to permit holders and emergency vehicles to showcase the beauty of the area without the hazard presented by motorists.

I made a new ash handle for my Nic Westermann swan-necked gouge as I wasn't happy with the shape of the older one I'd made from yew. The Shinto saw rasp proved to be the perfect tool for it. The coarse teeth remove material fast and the finer ones leave a good, slightly textured, finish, for grip.

A bridleway, followed by the route, runs through the park. It passes close to some of the sculptures (& one of the cafés). Others are only a short walk from it. An enterprising cyclist might enjoy plenty of the artworks, coffee & cake. The change of policy is still rubbish, though...

The things they're encouraged to care about are disregarded by politicians. The average teenager has a better grasp of the Nolan principles and a casual appraisal of their financial prospects reveals the struggle they face. No wonder so many are depressed and anxious.

Pedestrians on pavements and in shared-use spaces are at more risk from drivers on nearby roads than from cyclists sharing those spaces with them. It's about time we began addressing our concerns and solutions more proportionately to the risks.

It's as if these people have really tried, been patient, but it's just not working out. Rubbish. They place themselves & their money wherever the conditions best favour their tastes & they do it in a heartbeat. Mind the invisible hand doesn't give you a thick ear on the way back to Monaco.

One of the delights of my job is being drawn into the work of other teachers. I got to make this on an art visit to a pottery studio. I don't think The Great Pottery Throwdown will be troubled any time soon.
A ceramic plaque, like a wooden picture frame, with representation of an axe, knife, oak leaf and acorn. The glaze colours are washed-out but the forms aren't too bad.
