I think this post is a good tribute to the harm that vague or confusing dietary messaging can have on consumers. This sort of claim, as alluded to by OP, needs more context and more thorough evidence to be presented in the graphic for consumers to make correct, informed decisions.

I had this same thought! It's important to include other parties to make sure these guidelines are doable, but it can open doors for corporate interference and corruption of the guideline process. I think the politics of food is a very interesting and necessary intersection when studying nutrition.

While learning the history of America's dietary guidelines I was surprised to learn that children under the age of 2 years were not included until the 2020-2025 guidelines were released. It seems like more than an oversight to not include such a vulnerable population's nutrition. @beh353 #beh353

This post, although nearly a year old, is more important than ever. The nutrition of our country is obviously far more complex than one's individual food choices. Our health is inseparable from our socioeconomic status and resources. @beh353 #beh353

I agree, I also had a hard time remembering a lot of the specifics of the food I ate. I think it can be easy to overlook condiments and small snacks when thinking about our daily food intake. As a student I notice I think a lot more about what will give me energy to do work than what is healthier.

In the last 24 hours I had a butterfinger for breakfast; a chicken pesto sandwich on a telera roll with tomato, spinach and fresh mozzarella for lunch; a sugar cookie as a snack; and tom yum sukhothai and Thai iced tea for dinner. In the future I'd cut out some added sugars. @beh353 #beh353

This post is so relevant to our modern world, healthy eating shouldn't be placed in boxes of class when it's essential to the health of our whole population. Education and programs to make healthy eating easier and more accessible are so crucial.

This is a really great point! I think our modern diet culture really prioritizes protein intake for the goal of muscle building when in reality it has so many other essential functions. I think understanding more of the benefits of macros could help people better prioritize them!

After learning about macro and micro nutrients I was really interested to learn about the structure of whole grains. This is the bran, germ, and endosperm, they all provide essential vitamins and minerals. Most are lost during grain refinement since only the inner endosperm remains. @beh353 #beh353

This seems like a really good tip! I always worry about getting enough fiber and veggies and adding them to foods you know you like seems like a great way to ensure consistency. I like to add finely chopped kale to different pastas and rice dishes, it's almost impossible to tell! @beh353 #beh353

This is a great point! I thought this inconsistency was particularly important since the average person who needs diet advice probably won't look further into it. The scientific research can look completely different from what the public actually consumes 😭 @beh353 #beh353

When searching for nutrition resources one thing that stood out to me was that press release sources often misconstrue or don't finish reading the articles they source from scholars. It's no surprise this causes a chain of mistrust between the scholars, the press, and the public. @beh353 #beh353

My name is Brighid and I study pre-med! I'm chose this nutrition course because it fits well into my schedule and interests. I'm excited to learn about how diet impacts comorbidity. When I think of healthy eating I think of whole foods. My favorite food is sinigang! 🍲 @beh353.bsky.social #beh353
