Not here often anymore (life) but this article makes my blood boil. Does nobody think to google "how to EV road trip"? There's plenty of info out there (in addition to pieces I'vew done myself) www.canberratimes.com.au/story/915764...

Well, the specs have been released on the Zeekr 7X! It starts at $57,990 AUD, is loaded with tech (including V2L) and charges in 13 minutes! And that's just the entry level one! Video coming tomorrow with estimated NZD prices. Should be good. 😁

Electric vehicles are now under the magnifying glass of the Real World Testing Program, which aims to give drivers more understanding of how much fuel their cars actually use – or in the case of #EVs, how much range they actually offer.

Electric cars under spotlight in real world range tests | News | Open Road | The NRMA
EVs tested in Australia’s Real World Testing Program show less range than advertised, while hybrids and utes exceed fuel use and emissions standards in real-world driving.

Yes, kei cars are very popular there but our culture and roads are very different. It’s the same as Europe where there are tiny streets where only tiny cars can go down. And of course a lot more people (and cars) in much smaller countries.

There is an argument to ditch fuel excise and replace with weight based road user fees. This would discourage oversized battery electric cars also (I don’t disagree with this!) The cult of large cars, and increasingly larger, in Australia is going to be a tough nut to crack

Most nickel is used for stainless steel. According to this chart, 15% is used for batteries. An estimated 80% of that is used for EVs, so about 12%. (LFP not inc in nickel share here is about half that of EVs with nickel chem) - links to follow

V2L is shaping up as a point of difference for plug-in hybrids, and with bigger batteries than an early Leaf, also provide a large power source Oc, PHEVs need regular charging to achieve promised fuel efficiency - and they're not always a cheaper choice than BEVs www.mynrma.com.au/open-road/ne...

Interesting point. Canberra is very progressive on EVs - and also has a fair amount of apartments. What’s the state of affairs for charging at home there of no access to a driveway?

The grid is better served by EVs soaking up solar in the middle of the day and being able to discharge during peak periods … that is what will help reduce the need to upgrade transmission lines

That said, I love how a lot of streets in inner Sydney have been quietened compared to 30 years ago when I lived there, eg Bourke and Crown - focus on bike lanes and areas for cafe tables where there used to be parking etc

Japan is a tiny country and tiny streets with a lot more people living very close together…. I am not convinced that is a relevant comparison
200
Bridie Schmidt 🚗⚡ @bridieev.bsky.social · 08/03/2025
And yes less cars in the inner city in general is also a key goal 👌
020
Bridie Schmidt 🚗⚡ @bridieev.bsky.social · 08/03/2025
My car would be parked in a spot on that street anyway. Being able to charge it via an easily installed AC connection that is already available on an existing power pole is a no brainer
230
Bridie Schmidt 🚗⚡ @bridieev.bsky.social · 08/03/2025
A mix of charging is going to tick the box imho. Petrol stations would require DC charging so people don’t have to spend too long there. DC connections are much more complex to install. AC charging on streets are low hanging fruit for inner suburbs esp, where car park stations are at a premium.

In case you didn't know, when you buy a car, you leave it idle for between 90 and 95% of the time you own it. I wonder if there could be a use for a car when it's not being driven? A petrol/diesel car? Nope, you're stuffed mate. And electric car? Let's have a look. youtu.be/OSePcHBt2vA
