How good would these be as a city centre alternative to the 'Car Club' cars and vans? Rent them by the hour - ideal for car free families who don't have the space to store a cargo bike but occasionally need to move more people or larger loads around the city! We think they could be a great addition!

Bricycles @bricycles.org.uk · 06/05/2026
They were very easy to get used to and felt like they were keeping up with city traffic with no problem. There are different versions for carrying cargo (or how about a version modified to grit the cycle lanes during the winter?) but we were trying the passenger version for up to 3 people.

Last week we were invited to try the CityQ e-vehicles (with 4 wheels they must be e-quads rather than e-bikes?) They have no direct link between the pedals and the wheels, but you do have to pedal to activate the motor and with a maximum speed of 25kph they are still classed as an e-bike.

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.” “Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath Some costs aren’t costs.

Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

Commuting by bicycle in Belgium pays off as employees earn compensation for every km they ride. 1 in 6 employees commute by bike and get a bicycle allowance of €0.28/km. People cycling to work in 2024 earned an average of around €460 net per year (some as high as €810), up 20% over the past year.

One in five people in Flanders commuted by bike and received compensation last year, but this figure is significantly lower in Brussels and Wallonia.

In Utrecht, an astonishing 60% of journeys are made by bike—and just 5% by car—making it one of the world's most cycle-friendly cities. This is not an accident, but the deliberate result of infrastructure investments that prioritise resident's physical and mental health. WATCH: youtu.be/xCxNpasm7IY

Twelve of England’s regional mayors back plan to create ‘national active travel network’
Exclusive: Unprecedented move to focus initially on helping children to walk, cycle or scoot to school safely Twelve of England’s regional mayors have signed up to an unprecedented plan to create a “national active travel network”, focusing initially on helping children to walk, cycle or scoot to school safely. The scheme, which involves all non-London regional mayors other than one from Reform UK, is intended to fit into wider efforts to devolve transport planning, working with Active Travel England (ATE) to implement schemes they think would help their area. Tracy Brabin (Labour) of West Yorkshire. Paul Bristow (Tory) of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Andy Burnham (Labour) of Greater Manchester. Luke Campbell (Reform UK) of Hull and East Yorkshire. Oliver Coppard (Labour) of South Yorkshire. Helen Godwin (Labour), the West of England mayor. Ben Houchen (Tory) of Tees Valley. Kim McGuinness (Labour), the North East mayor. Richard Parker (Labour) of the West Midlands. Steve Rotheram (Labour), the Liverpool City Region mayor. David Skaith (Labour) of York and North Yorkshire. Chris Whitty says culture-war coverage of cycling could harm nation’s health
Chief medical officer for England urges people to set media cliches aside to focus on health benefits of physical activity Culture war-based coverage of cycling based on stereotypes of middle-aged men in Lycra could harm the nation’s health because it shifts focus away from the people and communities who benefit from physical activity, Chris Whitty has said. Speaking a day before the launch of the NHS’s 10-year-health plan, which is expected to focus heavily on prevention, Whitty, the chief medical officer for England, called for people to set aside media cliches and instead focus on “data which nobody can dispute”. We still have a long way to go before cycling is enabled for most people (those who are unwilling to mix with fast-moving motor vehicles), but continued investment in new infrastructure is the only solution.
