The next generation of @graalvm.org is shaping up nicely: fast startup, low CPU and memory usage, with no build step or project changes required! 🚀 Here’s a simple benchmark using a single-file program:

But even without source compilation, the improvements are still there, since startup touches quite of bit of JDK code.

JEP 544 (openjdk.org/jeps/544), the remaining part of Leyden has landed in JDK mainline. So now we can do this! This source launcher involves javac compilation, that is the bulk of the work here.

Tested it on 6k java file project * Without parameter wrapping, it leaves dense signatures, with several params on one line * TableTest compat, the formatter reflows long Strings requiring a custom setup to disabled this * JVM integrations need explicit exports * Native bin is 3x slower than Java

I wouldn't go that way, otherwise what's even the point of having sources. Pushing to the extreme the tokenization embedding could work directly on binaries and LLM would work the same way ; I'd rather not. I think formatter should do their job for humans, and agents can still use AST aware tooling

There's also Prince of Spaces that is interesting and similar in intent and output. However these new formatters are pretty young. The challenge is having maintenance.
