Denmark and Minnesota - both ~6m people - share strong agriculture, industry and green-energy ambitions. Thank you @governorwalz.mn.gov and First Lady Gwen Walz for tonight’s reception, and Comissioner Matt Varilek, Ambassador Ken Howery and director Gregg Mast for good talks.

A decarbonised EU27 energy system is not just about replacing fuels. Heat Roadmap Europe 5 shows primary energy supply can fall 39%/~9 PWh in 2050 through energy efficiency, electrification, redesigned heat markets + use of renewable and waste heat. Link: vbn.aau.dk/ws/portalfil...

Stor korrektion i AF26: Energistyrelsen halverer fremskrivningen for datacentres elforbrug.

Europe heads into winter with renewed gas risk: storage is only ~65% full, the lowest for this time in 13 years, while gas prices are at a 3½-year high. A mild, windy winter would help. A cold, low-wind winter could quickly tighten markets again. Renewables matter.

An economic catastrophe! The closure of the sugar factory in Nakskov highlights a fundamental problem with investing billions in gas infrastructure where demands could instead be electrified. But first of all its a disaster for many Nakskov families who rely on the jobs.

The New Danish government wants fast oil/gas boiler exit by 2035. It's energy security, electrification, infrastructure + consumer protection. Better municipal heat plans Support: -gas homes waiting for district heating -vulnerable households District heat expansion Potential state heat transmission

The New Danish Government's grid focuses • Better use of existing capacity • Targeted expansion of transmission/distribution • Co-location of renewable energy and energy-intensive consumption • Regulation supporting storage and flexible demand • Faster approval • Lower costs

4/4 The framing is right. But speed is not enough. An intelligent transition matters even more: grids, flexibility, district heating, storage, local acceptance, regulation and implementation will now decide whether the targets become reality. stm.dk/statsministe...

1/4 The new Danish Government presents a new foundation for the energy transition. Energy is still at the centre of Danish politics - now also as security policy, competitiveness policy, infrastructure policy, industrial policy and cost-of-living policy.

Action is making a difference. But not nearly enough. The old worst-case climate scenario (8.5 C) has been pushed out of the CMIP7 because it is less plausible. Why? wind + solar expanded rapidly EVs helped slow growth coal expansion less plausible www.thenewdaily.com.au/opinion/2026...

For hydrogen production, electricity cost is more important than electrolyser CAPEX. Electrolysers need to capture low-price hours, surplus renewable production and periods of grid congestion. If they cannot do that, subsidising electrolyser capacity alone will not make hydrogen cheap.
110
Brian Vad Mathiesen @brianvad.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Electrolysers have to operate flexibly. If they run as constant baseload demand, we would effectively need extra power plant generation grid capacity and balancing resources next to them. That would make the system more expensive and would highly increase cost of the electricity used for hydrogen.
110
Brian Vad Mathiesen @brianvad.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
The key question is not simply whether we should support offshore wind with a CfD or support electrolysers. The relevant state-finance question is whether flexible demand - including electrolysers - can reduce the need for CfD guarantees by improving the revenue case for offshore wind.

5/5 Grant agreements still need to be signed, and key issues around grid connection and hydrogen infrastructure still need to be resolved. But as a strategic signal, this is very significant. #Hydrogen #PtX

Brian Vad Mathiesen @brianvad.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
4/5 this is not only good news for Danish hydrogen producers. It also strengthens the case for the hydrogen backbone for industrial decarbonisation in Germany and for Denmark’s role as a northern European energy hub. This is still not the finish line.

1/5 Europe is finally starting to align one of the hardest parts of the hydrogen story: support, demand and infrastructure. Germany’s €1.3 billion support for renewable hydrogen production in Denmark is therefore not just another subsidy - its new market design - inovation market design.

2/2 But if every crisis leads to a weaker carbon signal, Europe risks preserving the fossil vulnerability that made it exposed in the first place. The long-term answer must also be electrification, energy efficiency, domestic renewables, stronger grids and less fossil dependence in industry itself.

170
Brian Vad Mathiesen @brianvad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

2/2 The real lesson is to electrify the right end-uses and build system flexibility, combine electrification with smart infrastructure choices and recognise that national pathways depend on very different starting points. Resistance electric heating is NOT smart electrification.

Brian Vad Mathiesen @brianvad.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
1/2 An interesting graph - but also one that can be misread. It makes many people think the answer is simply to copy Norway or Sweden in the electrification pathway. I do not think that is the right lesson. Do not copy Norway and Sweden one-to-one.

Solar is no longer just “the future”. In 2025 it overtook wind globally and moved to within touching distance of nuclear. The big question now is no longer whether solar is central to the power system, but whether grids, storage, flexibility and electrification can keep up. ⚡️ @ember-energy.org
