Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 8hThe spaghetti dinner / chest-popping scene in the original ALIEN, shown on the MASSIVE curved screen (with real curtains! that would take forever to open for trailers, then close, then re-open as the feature began!) in the great movie palace in DC: the Uptown Theatre. Opening week, 1979. 120
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 17hHere’s a book you probably haven’t heard of. I can’t recommend it highly enough—not only for its extensive research and insights into late-1800s Hawaii, but as example of American history rhyming and REPEATING. The nonstop racism and LYING by American oligarchs + media is all there 140 years ago. 030
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 18hIf you read @gilduran.com ’s THE NERD REICH this news makes so, so much sense. It fits right in with what A16Z has become. 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 20hOne thing I honestly did not expect to see in the 2020s in the United States is how common and routine cowardice from politicians and corporations—especially major media corporations—would turn out to be. Principles, ethics, basic integrity: jettisoned at the merest whiff of friction/risk. 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 21hAre you kidding? I love the whole MV dir cut, boats racing and all! 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Theory: The whole Route 66 thing is a decades-old oil and gas industry psyop to lull Americans to think favorably, nostalgically for the era of leaded gasoline, cars without seatbelts, everyone smoking, and the vroom of internal combustion engines. 😉 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026EV car show at the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe today. My, have times changed. In years past the event would be full of Teslas, with a couple other makes here and there. Today, I counted two Teslas. I guess if you wanna learn what’s up with Tesla these days you’re better off at a Nazi rally 🤷♂️ 111
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I’m about as inclined to click on an article entitled “How _________ is using AI to _________” as I am to click on articles about the benefits of foot removal, say, or moving back to the East Coast 😵💫 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Looks like it’s gonna come down to the only way of opting out of the techbro-pocalypse is to not opt in, and start planning for a post-internet future. 040
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026That was eye-opening. Of course they’d basically be an IP company 🤷♂️ 120
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026How bad is it when the fortune cookie turns out to have no fortune in it? 👀👀👀😵💫😱 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I’m still discovering artists who turn out to have been cranking out albums since the 90s and these days they’re all over Bandcamp and I wind up buying everything they’ve done. (For example somehow I never heard of Boards of Canada until 2026 and now I have all their music!) 😎 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026TFW you get an email from the sole proprietor of yet another little software boutique in Europe announcing a brand-new audio plugin and you check it out and it SOUNDS FANTASTIC and it’s only like 79 euros for a short time and OF COURSE you must. buy. it. NOW. 😵💫 This happens way too frequently! 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Why is it that telcos don’t do anything to stop scammers from making calls on random but real phone numbers where the actual customer assigned that number is unaware calls are being made from that number? Just like fake email addresses w/ spam. Why won’t telcos fix this? Is it unfixable? 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I order quickly then see that the lady taking orders is touching the cash register screen and handling raw cash, but is also making the food orders WITH THE SAME GLOVES. 👀👀 The adventures of fast food, I tell ya. 😱 🤷♂️ 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Picked up a submarine sandwich at a sub shop today and the guy ahead of me in line was wearing pants with the pricetag thingie still stapled to the pants. He wanted to order ten giant 16” submarines, each completely different, but couldn’t make up his mind, so he let me go ahead of him… 😎 100
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Ooh, just discovered it’s already available on various streaming/VOD services. Will watch tonight! 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Would love to see this, but, alas, it doesn’t appear to be playing in even a single cinema anywhere in my 121,000-sq-mi state. 🤷♂️ 100
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Oh I think Wilson fit right in, in that dinner scene. Right in. 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026For Musk and these other fascist broligarchs in the US, the future of war is *domestic* and drone/robot-based: I suspect he is pivoting Tesla away from EVs to full-on AI and autonomous robots. Don’t be fooled by Tesla marketing pics of Optimus butlers serving drinks—they’ll be holding weapons. 020
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Like some kind of unfunny, wretched, cringey, never-aired, never-edited-down SNL short, THE HISTORY OF CONCRETE was a 100-min ordeal. Well, ok, 70-min, when I walked out after probably the 3rd held-too-long shot of a filthy New York toilet. The film was making me dislike NY even more. Bleh. 🤮🤷♂️ 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026In case you’re not aware, the Brad Pitt film HEART OF THE BEAST about a man and dog in Alaska, now in cinemas, prominently features a bog late in the film which plays an important role in the story. Thought of your book when that scene happened in the film 😉 110
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I‘ve never been a fan of press photos which make the politician a towering giant. It’s medieval. I‘d rather see press photogs grab a couple of boom mics, replace the mics with remote-controlled cameras, and capture photos from way above, showing politicians as the weird little guys they are. 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026You know what would be amazing? If instead of more bland talking points about “energy,” just ONCE you talked plainly and *honestly* about the oil and gas industry, your interactions with it, your promises to it, your quid pro quos with it, and its capture of @energydems.senate.gov 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Reminds me of our basset hound decades ago: my mother cooked a huge roast beef, took it out of oven, placed on counter, turned to get something, and the dog just jumped up, took the whole roast off the plate, landed on floor, and had this “omg what do I do now” look of a wild animal. He ate it all.🤷♂️ 050
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Fantastic news! Congrats! Looking forward to tuning in. 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 01/10/2026We need a SlopAlert® service that documents all the AI crap pouring out of content mills everywhere: websites, articles, magazines, books, movies, TV shows, streamer series, music, everything. 020
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I truly hope MUSK turns out to be among the best docs ever made. But based on the people named as interviewees, expectations are low. It‘s a VAST story requiring 100s new interviews—not 4hrs of found, prev-released footage. Fmr, current employees. Tesla owners. Dealers. Politicians. Etc. We’ll see.🤷♂️ 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I wish the film spent as much time on the latest scientific research and discoveries regarding extreme age, as it did on the filmmaker himself and his son. I would have preferred a lot more science and less narcissistic filler. 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 01/10/2026THE THIRD MAN is about as noiry a noir as a noir can be, and that is a very good thing! 😎 110
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Good, helpful review. (It would be interesting to learn, for each film critic who’s seen and reviewed DIGGER, whether they drive a gas car or an EV.) 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 30/09/2026The author of this piece has apparently never seen STAR WARS. If you get a detail wrong like this in your opening graf, well… 🤷♂️ 020
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Well, I’d love to see it but… For all intents and purposes it’s being “buried” by being sent out to Peacock pasture. 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 30/09/2026It’s a more effective narrative (read: propaganda) for public absorption. They don’t wanna reveal the real strategy which is right out of NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR and BLACK MIRROR. 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 30/09/2026When you filmed this, did you use boom mics and at least capture the on-set audio onto devices separate from the Bolex camera, then mix it all in editing, or was all audio—dialogue and ambient environment and Foley—originated in post? 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 30/09/2026gas… cars… are… fun 😵💫 denial and excuses, in other words. “i don’t wanna,” in other words. 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 30/09/2026That red graph line should be transitions to BEVs in the United States. If you're still driving a gas car, in late 2026, you're a denier of the climate-emergency. 100
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I loved candy corn during Halloween, but it’s been decades since I ate even one. 000
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Thanks for the tip! (Off to mute “nhl” words and tags…) 130
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 29/09/2026How about EVs not gas cars. Yeah, I know the answer. You’re in Michigan. So, gas cars. 010
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Y’know, they should start calling us *producers*—I mean, who do they think is supplying all the data to those data centers? We are. Without any payment, either. 020
Brian Dear @brianstorms.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Keep an eye on Odin, the dog. Watch how in one scene his bad front leg is on the right—while most scenes have it being his left. Oh, and then there's the one scene where Odin's running without any black leg brace at all--two perfectly good legs. Oops. Haven't seen continuity goofs like this in ages. 000
