Working on an action scene and just had this thought: There should always be an answer to "What's going on in this fight scene?" that's more interesting than "These guys are trying to beat each other." It could be a character thing, a tactical thing, a stakes thing—so many possible answers!

Plus I spent some time thinking about the difference between a rotting orange and a moldy orange, and what that means for Rania's hair

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍, including plenty of 😆 and 🥹. Consider yourself garlanded! Also, I too like to avoid unpleasant sensations in my teeth, and I want to know if this book's world had prehistoric dinosaurs like we did.

I just read The Unspoken Name off this list, and it was really good! Hench and The Obsidian Tower are two books on this list that I had read previously, and they're both really good too! I'm going to go for The Vanished Queen next, as soon as I can go to my library. Thank you for the list!

"Billions of people experienced measurable improvements in health, safety, and material conditions in 2025. That progress didn’t make the news. But it happened anyway." It turns out a better world IS possible.

The errors were reported by a company that makes an AI code screener, so I'm not going to trust this statistic enough to start citing it, but it IS nice to see something refuting the "coding is one of the things AI is good at actually" narrative.

I didn't really understand how calendars worked until I was an adult. I knew how the days were laid out, but none of that information told you what day was today! Wasn't that supposed to be the whole point? But now, if I have enough half-remembered clues, then it does help me figure out the day

During my shower, there was a spider slipping down the tiles on the wall, and I tried to rescue it. But when I caught it, it just crawled down to the base of my finger and, as far as I can tell, died there before I could bring it to a safer wall. Poor spider.

I love seeing someone criticizing a bad take, clicking through to see what they're criticizing, and the bad take in question is just "ℹ️ Blocked". Good job, past me! Good job blocking whoever that was!

It looks like this. I'm not sure what a knife like this is called or what it's supposed to be used for, but it works well when a recipe calls for bone-in skinless chicken and I need to cut the skin off myself.
A yellow knife. The sharp edge is... wiggly, like a sine wave.

Unveiling the official U.S. cover for WEARING THE LION! My next book, about the messy relationship between Hera and Heracles. So glad to finally share this with y'all. I love its striking colors, and the creatures it hints at--each is a huge part of the book. The art is by Adam Auerbach! #BookSky
A fancy book cover! Against a nocturnal background of teals and purples, we see two Greek columns, done in black. Between them walks the silhouette of a bearded man in a tunic, carrying a lion across his shoulders. The man's head is tilted so he can smile into the peaceful lion's face; their look into each other's eyes like they share a secret. Around the right column, several serpentine heads of a hydra are watching them. From beneath the left column, a deer is watching them. In yellow text, the cover reads WEARING THE LION. JOHN WISWELL. AUTHOR OF SOMEONE YOU CAN BUILD A NEST IN.

Teal outlines of silhouettes reveal

I hope she finishes the Steerswoman series, but ALSO the poetry project that the Patreon page is devoted to looks really really cool and interesting, especially coming from this particular author! If the Steerswoman books are any indication, Rosemary Kirstein is really good at this kind of story.
A screenshot of Rosemary Kirstein's blog post (linked in the quote). At the top is an image saying "Did I Tell You About The Light", with a landscape that's blurred and fragmented as if we're seeing it through textured glass. Under the image is text that reads:

So, that's it. Poems? Mostly. Some will be not-poems, but still related. Let's call them "entries."

The project as a whole is designed to work piece-by-piece. The effect is cumulative. You won't know what's happening at first. You won't know who's talking, or where they are.

That's okay. It'll all work out in the end.

October 31st being spooky day works well because 31 is like 21's bigger cousin, except it feels spikier, darker, and pricklier because it's not also a multiple of 7. Having completely baseless and unjustified feelings about certain numbers is fun!

I've been living in this apartment for 4 years, and only now discovered that the bathroom door has a lock. You have to push the knob in then twist it, and when I did that by accident I thought I'd broken the knob and trapped myself in the bathroom at first!

If I respond thoughtfully, a survey that actually "takes no more than 10 minutes to complete" should have one question. One (1) single question. That question could be anything, but unless I anticipated and pondered everything they want to know in advance, it's going to take me some time to answer.

would love to abolish the notion that making your audience feel joy is inherently intellectually and artistically inferior to making them feel pain, a cheap and cynical attitude which poisons everything from misogynist disdain for romance to why it’s harder for comedies to win Best Picture
