Whenever someone legitimizes harmful shit with the importance of achieving "dominance" you have a fascist at hand.

Oof, this makes me feel ill. It’s epistimicide on an unfathomable scale, and we’re being led into it to the joyful beating of the drums of “progress.”

This is about what I would expect. GenAI is a B or C student. For my part, this is driving a move away from graded homework and toward exams that test practical skills in a controlled environment.

I marvel at how poorly such things work sometimes, and then wonder about what are inevitably far more complex systems: do they actually work as well as we’re told they do? (No. Surely not.) For things like autonomous vehicles, weapons or not, this seems like a Big Problem.

Be sure to use Al when making your next, I don't know, meal plan, for example. Definitely do not call your friend who loves to cook and ask her for her favorite recipes or tips or ways to save time making meals, because you will end
up talking for longer than you had hoped, hearing, perhaps, about her father's cancer diagnosis or how lonely she's been or even what she's planted in her spring garden and then lost with the early frost.

Is something “too dangerous” if it’s easy to slap on guardrails? Tigers are really dangerous. Tigers are at the zoo in my town. Don’t go in the tiger enclosure at the zoo. The zoo is pretty good at keeping you out. Under normal circumstances, tigers aren’t really something to be alarmed about.

Particularly in the context of (appropriate) crackdowns on LLM-generated papers (e.g., on arXiv) and more and more tales of fabricated citations, two reminders: (1) LLMs do not "cite their sources" (2) Using an LLM to generate, complete, or fix LaTeX code can result in fabricated citations

I end every semester with a lecture on “you should think about graduate school” and each time the response is the same. If a student’s parents don’t have advanced degrees, it would never have occurred to them to consider even a Masters prior to my pitching it.

This is in part due to the fact that knowledge work is regarded as low-prestige in NA. Finding strong domestic applicants for grad programs in e.g., computer engineering isn’t hard because there are few qualified students. Few apply; the economic incentives for working immediately are strong.
