Does Fire Emblem need to be that? Not a chance. The real longevity of the series (and Advance Wars; god rest your soul) came from the varied and dynamic combat systems that allowed every playthrough to be tackled in a different way. I wager 99% of players will complete FW once and not look back.

FW is a humongous leaning tower of systems upon systems where the actual combat feels like a side task to the menial Persona-style bull that started to work its way into FE from 3H. Add in 4 entire separate pathways of playing the game and to truly see it through it's a 120+ hour experience!!

Nintendo have been massively prioritising scale recently across all their main franchises, seemingly in an attempt to make the games more of a 'forever' style game that means they don't have to release more than one per generation. I just don't think they're actually that good at it.

25 hours with Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave so far and the only real thought I have about it is that it might be the biggest and most expansive game Nintendo has ever made. I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing because it fits a recurring theme of their tentpole releases recently...

Sonic The Hedgehog (Master System/Game Gear). A quick diversion before the DS era. This actually surprised me a bit! Plays more like a Mario title than a Sonic title but with tighter physics and arguably more fun level design. Quite unforgiving but just the right length at around ~1 hour. 6/10

Sonic Advance 3. Started this one not vibing with it whatsoever due to the Tag Team mechanic (still not sold on it) but the game finds its stride quickly. Gimmicky obstacles and unnecessary alterations to character abilities come to mind as frustrating. A nice GBA era conclusion. 7/10

The Tag Team mechanic also leaves me a bit wanting. The concept is cool but the execution seems a bit 'why bother'? That being said, I'm not a fan of gimmicks in the 2D titles generally. I can see it being pretty deep for speedrunners though.

Sonic Advance 2. A very, very good Sonic game. Impressed with this and a clear improvement over the first GBA title. A roster of original zones (shoutout Music Plant!), a better soundtrack than the OG, and the gameplay is a LOT more fluid. 7.5/10 - Mania upped to 8.5/10 (prev 8/10).
