animation is amazing bc you only need a few drawings, as long as you arrange them just right

one of two frames for the spin attack. the helmet has been turned into a swirl of shapes, and the axe is drawn multiple times to simulate motion blur

second frame of the spin attack. by drawing the objects slightly offset and rapidly flipping between the frames, you can create the illusion of spinning without having to draw a ton.

cooldown pose for the spin attack. the lumberjack has the axe lowered and looks exhausted.

Gnomedrop Gorge is maybe my favorite section of my book, and it was maybe the hardest i went on track design. i wanted to make sure everything fit to scale, including the oversized mushroom houses!

The abandoned diner needed to not just have an exterior designed, but the interior so it could later be busted through during the final race in Hex Americana.

Skullcross Speedway is where Hex Americana's first big race happens, and it gets revisited later on before the climax. I was very committed to making a somewhat-plausible track that could read as a skull from overhead. The idea was that the lower jaw was first, the full skull built later on.

Been working on a reference sheet for Dragon Road's starting inn. It got me thinking about all the sets I made for my previous book (Hex Americana) and whether some of those would be good portfolio pieces for set design.
