Yep. The internet led me astray once again

There is a flashback about a character surviving a slashing incident 11 years earlier. It's about 90 seconds long.

Once again, an "obscure slasher" turns out not to he a slasher at all, though the blurb does sound like one.

Reading I've run across "Roe Richmond" a couple times and assumed it was a pen-name, but it was a real guy, a fellow Vermonter who only published 7 stories in 13 years, then vanished. This was his last and reads more like 1949 than 1962.

How does this kid breathe like this?

Oh... I was like wtf, I have to work Monday.

Wait, it's a three-day weekend? What holiday is Monday?

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

Okay, it IS a slasher, it just takes a long time (until act 3) to get going.

000

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

I thought this was a slasher, but so far there's only one death and only the audience knows about it.

Reading I always pick up these 70s men's adventure series novels when I see a new to me one. They're always bad, but sometimes in a good way. This one is cartoonishly goofy tough-guy power fantasy, but not unentertaining.

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Thank you! It was an honor and fun to boot.

Oh, hey. I was thrilled to write an introduction to two novels by one of my all-time favorite writers, especially as THE VENGEFUL VIRGIN was the first Brewer I ever read. Coming November 3rd from Stark House. a.co/d/03IdH7qD

An A+ from his those-who-can't teacher at least. To be fair, the prose is good, the subject matter is just... not interesting.

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Yeah. I knew him as a scifi writer so when I saw an earlier book that presented as crime, I was like cool. It's about a guy torn between the career he wants and the career he can do, and the woman he loves and the woman he wants. It's almost all navel-gazing.

100

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Reading Looked like and blurb read like a crime novel, but it's a literary novel about career and emotional troubles. Compelling was primarily a scifi writer so I was interested when I thought it was crime, but it's just not my thing. I'll keep giving it a bit more chance.

Dr. Strong, by the way, is a moderately modified trace of the cover of Sleepwalker #1.

010

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 29/09/2026

Eric Roberts draws "Dr. Strong" for Marvel Comics--sitting in the middle of the Bullpen drawing, chatting with Stan Lee, getting paid an hourly rate and medical insurance. Larry Cohen did not do his research on the industry.

Watching For a thriller, this is a bit goofy. But a scene was filmed in the Marvel Bullpen!

Reading, but I dunno about this one. Brown was a writer of JD novels, and nonfiction, with a smattering of standard mysteries. I bought this cover-unseen without realizing it's a historical novel about 18th century Jamaica.

Early 20th century sandwich recipes are so weird. They'll be called like "Aunt Gertie's Famous Old-time Manhattan-style Ham Sandwich" and it'll just be a slab of baked ham between pieces of buttered bread. Or they'll be "The Working Man" and it'll be stewed bananas, horseradish and cow tongue.

This is commonly listed as a Euro proto-slasher, so I expected cat & mouse horror ala TERROR TRAIN, but instead, it's s really slow, really grimey, really cruel, and really uncomfortable torture horror.

My newest novel, THE DARKER THE NIGHT, is available in print, ebook, and audio Matt knew it wouldn’t be easy convincing his ex Lilly their son should have a chance to live with his dad. Lilly is dead set against the idea. Now she’s just dead, and Matt is the prime suspect. books2read.com/u/3Jq1Bv

For a movie tagged "teen comedy," "80s comedy," and "raunchy comedy" this is decidedly tame and unfunny.

000

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Reading I don't remember when I bought this, but it's actually surprisingly high quality for sleaze. It's very patent Shell Scott pastiche, even name-dropping him as a character's hero, with just a tad more spice.

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

It's far in the future, but next cat child I adopt I'm naming Russ Tamblyn.

It's perfectly fine. No Bava films, either father or son, are bad. It's just that it was marketed as horror and it's really not.

010

Brandon Barrows @brandonbarrows.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

This is not a horror movie. Despite it being tagged as horror everywhere, it's basically a crime movie with a lot of interpersonal drama.
