36th completed game of 2026 is The Incident at Galley House (2026). A masterpiece of the detective genre, somehow surpassing even Lucas Pope's extraordinary Return of the Obra Dinn (2018). Every person who loves solving mysteries should play this game. An instant classic.

I'm interested in a take on Silent Hill: Townfall from someone who works in a hospital. It feels like a pretty brutal, hard-hitting riff on ERs during the height of COVID (a particular fear of mine), but I don't have any subject-matter expertise so maybe that's off-base.

35th completed game of 2026 is Silent Hill 3 (2003). The plot's a little incoherent, as I never played Silent Hill (1999) and this is a direct sequel, but it's about as scary as a game can get - the lushly detailed nightmare scenes make its short playtime entirely worthwhile.

At the risk of being negative, I'm surprised that Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is 70% cutscenes by volume in its opening hours and is this badly written. It's a rather challenging contrast with Zero Company.

34th completed game of 2026 is Star Wars: Zero Company (2026). A tactical strategy game in the style of XCOM and Midnight Suns, it succeeds best when it leans into its affecting narrative; I was genuinely shocked a few times! The drawbacks include low difficulty and bugs, but I recommend it.

It could be inflated expectations, but I caught the new Resident Evil movie tonight and was left a little disappointed. The setpieces and Abrams were good, but it leaned too hard into comedy. I thought the same about Weapons, so I may just not vibe with Cregger's style.

If you coupd only keep one game from each decade, which would they be? For me: 1970s - Galaxian 1980s - Tetris 1990s - Super Mario World 2000s - Resident Evil 4 2010s - Into the Breach 2020s - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.

Screenshot for a Defector podcast episode with the headline "Consider the Emotional Lives of Scallops" only the accompanying photo is a white gormless stubbled red-headed UK singer of recent notoriety giving a flat smile to the camera while wearing a washed out peach top as beige as he is against a flat background. So, actually, probably a scallop anyway.

Having played it for 8 years at this point, I can confidently say that Into the Breach (2018) is one of my top 3 games - it's about as close to Tetris' perfection as post-Tetris games have gotten.

Big tip for folks playing Star Wars: Zero Company in Performance Mode on PS5: if you have a VRR-enabled TV, go into the console's menu and select "Apply [VRR] to Unsupported Games." The framerate was initially so inconsistent that I was getting a headache, but VRR is a night-and-day difference.

33rd completed game of 2026 is The Roottrees Are Dead (2023). This complex detective game never got too obscure for its own good, and the visuals evoked my 1990s youth without going overboard; I couldn't put it down! I'm grateful for a spiritual successor to Return of the Obra Dinn (2018).

32nd completed game of 2026 is Suikoden II (1998). This is an absolutely extraordinary game, finally dethroning Final Fantasy VI as my favorite '90s JRPG. The combat and recruitment mechanics are fun, the story is compelling clear through to credits, and the pixel art is best-in-class. I love it!
