It could be that AI is the reason, or at least part of the reason, for the Fermi paradox. Perhaps by the time a biological civilization develops the technology to explore the galaxy, it has also developed AI -- which destroys it before it can go anywhere.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the fact that the son of a bitch thinks ninety bucks makes any kind of difference to anyone's health care costs.

Some of you may remember my 1993 novel 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯. But you may not remember Jimmy Blackburn's penultimate words (page 294): "𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 isn't what it used to be."

I'm emerging from a few months of Bluesky silence to express my thanks to the people of Hungary for rejecting authoritarianism -- and for giving the rest of the world some hope.

Pew Research Institute (2023): • Red State Texas has about 2.1 million undocumented immigrants • Red State Florida has 1.6 M undocumented immigrants • Blue State Minnesota has 130,000. And yet only Minnesota is being occupied by masked thugs over "immigration." It's *not* about immigration.

Hey, Bill! Howard's literary executor is the writer Jessica Reisman. And things are happening for the estate -- for one thing, more Waldrop movies are in production. "Mary Margaret Road-Grader," "Heirs of the Perisphere," and "A Dozen Tough Jobs" are coming up!

This week at SecondTime Books in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, I randomly picked this Jan. 1988 copy of F&SF Magazine up and bought it based on the cover, and upon reading said cover story, by @bradleycdenton.bsky.social, was surprised how timely the tale was for right now in America, 38 years on. A+++++
Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine, January 1988, featuring cover illustration by Jill Bauman for Bradley Denton's featured short story, the Hero of the Night. The artwork shows a headless man in 18th century clothing as a statue, holding a musket upon which grows a flowering vine, against an astral view of the moon and galaxy with the top of an analog clock with Roman numerals.

Thank you, Erik. I wish that story -weren't- still relevant. But here we are. Several years ago, artist Jill Bauman sent me a beautiful signed 8X10 print of that F&SF cover. It's one of my most prized possessions, and it's on my living room wall so I can see it every day.

Pretty much. She has a hard rubber chew bone that she'll mess with a bit -- but Lucille is the only stuffed toy she wants. All others are ignored.

Millie with her stuffed hedgehog, Lucille. This is Millie's sixth or seventh hedgehog, since she tends to destroy them. It makes me think of B.B. King, who had many guitars over the years, but called each one "Lucille." So I call Millie's hedgehogs "Lucille," too. No one else does, though.

14 October 1774: The First Continental Congress adopted its "Declaration and Resolves" that the Colonies were "entitled to life, liberty, and property" and that "they have never ceded to any sovereign power whatever a right to dispose of either without their consent." NO KINGS was on the horizon.

A moment of doggie goofiness to help bolster you for the coming week. Odds are you're gonna need it.
A fluffy black-and-white border collie named Chester pushes his head into the chest of his best pal Millie, a reddish-tan black-mouthed cur who is lying on her side on a carpeted floor against a dog bed. Millie is looking up at the camera with a wide-eyed and open-mouthed goofy expression. Her tongue is just about to loll out.

Barb (who was with Chester, who likes to dawdle) took this shot of Millie and me as we headed home on the morning walk a few days ago. We'll be out there again tomorrow.
A dog and her human, a few dozen yards distant at the top of a hill, are silhouetted against the yellow-gold glow of the rising sun as they walk away from the camera on a paved country road.

B.B. King (1925-2015) was born 100 years ago today. He and his guitar, Lucille, made a joyful noise for the world. And if Lucille broke a string onstage, B.B. would change it himself as he sang. They spread unity and love, never division or hate. How I miss them. www.youtube.com/watch?v=P27t...

At a profound level, MAGA's immigration policies are simply a way to transfer taxpayer dollars to private contractors whose job is to terrorize the American people. Fundamentally, leaders are using our own money to destroy our democracy.

I've lived in Texas long enough that I can remember back when we had a goddamn -great- governor who refused to kowtow to bullies. I mean, a fair, fierce, truth-and-justice, no-voter-left-behind badass. Man, those were the days. Don't believe me? Look her up. Her name was Ann Richards.

On 9 May 1800, the abolitionist John Brown was born. He would be convicted of treason against Virginia for his October 1859 raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, and hanged on 2 December. His final words asserted that "the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood."
This is the Thomas Hart Benton mural in the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka depicting the abolitionist John Brown along with images of the American Civil War and "Bleeding Kansas." Brown, his hair and beard windblown and wild, stands in the center of the mural, a rifle in one hand and a Bible in the other. He is flanked by Union fighters with a U.S. flag on the left, and Confederate fighters with a Confederate battle flag on the right. Brown stands over the dead bodies of a Union soldier and a Confederate soldier. In the near background are covered wagons drawn by oxen, with weary armed men trudging beside them. In the far background, a tornado and a prairie fire threaten destruction. Dark clouds and smoke tinged with flame cover the sky.

A second photo of two dogs lying down in a grassy green yard while chewing on either end of a slender 6-foot stick or tree branch. A brown 60-pound black-mouthed cur mix named Millie (who found the stick) chews on the right end, while a black-and-white 50-pound border collie named Chester chews about two feet from the left end. Chester is tilting his head to lift his end of the stick into the air.

Millie (right) found a nice big stick. After a brief tug-of-war, she decided to share it with Chester (left). She is a generous soul.

On 2 April 1931, Virne "Jackie" Mitchell - a 17-year-old who was just the second woman to play professional baseball - struck out both Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth in an exhibition game between her AA team, the Chattanooga Lookouts, and the New York Yankees. Commissioner Landis then voided her contract.
A black and white photo of four people on 2 April 1931. Left to right are a smiling Lou Gehrig in his New York Yankees uniform, a smiling Virne "Jackie" Mitchell in her Chattanooga Lookouts uniform, an unidentified smiling man in a suit and fedora, and Babe Ruth in his Yankees uniform. Mitchell is shaking hands with an unsmiling and obviously unhappy Ruth. Mitchell, the second woman to ever play professional baseball, has just struck out both Gehrig and Ruth in an exhibition game between the Lookouts and the Yankees.
