🇨🇦 CANADIAN READERS: It's more important than ever to buy Canadian and support Canadian-made books! Did you know that less than 5% of the Canadian book market is controlled by Canadian-owned publishing companies? We're proud to be part of the 5%! 🍁❤📚 4/🧵

Our Nova Scotia #Gaelic flag sales to the USA🇺🇸 and UK🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧 have reopened for a very short window! All orders must be in by THU 4 SEP 2025. US orders go out Fri Sep 5 by USPS. UK Sep 15 Royal Mail. Due to the unfortunate tariff nonsense, we don't forsee having another chance to ship to the USA in 2025.

In the bottom panel, a white man is shouting. He is labeled "Bradan Press" and he is shouting "A bheil dhìth oirbh air leabhraichean Gàidhlig??" which means "Do you need any Gaelic books??"

The Bàrd's poem, "Òran do Neòinean-chùbhraidh" (Address to a Mayflower), in O Cheapaich nan Craobh edited by Trueman & Laurinda Matheson, is excerpted in our #Gaelic cookbook, ÁS AN ABHAINN MHÓIR: ENGLISH-GAELIC RECIPES FROM PICTOU COUNTY! 🧵 #nsgaelic #novascotia
A cropped 2-page spread from a Gaelic-English cookbook published by Bradan Press, with the English on the left and the Gaelic on the right. It's a Gaelic poem, "Òran do Neòinean-chùbhraidh" which means "Address to a May Flower". A spiral-bound cookbook opened to a 2-page spread with the end of the Gaelic poem "Address to a May Flower" on the left side. On the right side a new section starts, called "Miscellaneous" in Englihs and "Measgaichte" in Scottish Gaelic.

The Mayflower (trailing arbutus, epigaea repens) is the provincial flower of Nova Scotia and it's in bloom right now! In Gaelic it's called "neòinean-chùbhraidh" according to Alexander MacDonald, Alasdair Ailein Mhór, Bàrd na Ceapaich... 🧵 #gaelic #nsgaelic

Tweet #9 from Calum MacLeoid:
"The best/cheesiest way I can describe the sensation of learning Gaelic is like a scifi/fantasy trope of finding out there is this secret level of reality that you haven't noticed before. Like there are wizards or the Matrix or that your pal's the slayer."

Tweet #7 from @CalumMacLeoid:
"It wasn't always easy. I remember it took me an hour and a dictionary to read the first page of Am Miseanaraidh by Iain Mac a' Ghobhainn. But the support from the department, my friends and of course my family made it possible. Now I write Gaelic novels and columns and poetry."

Tweet #6 from @CalumMacLeoid:
"The attitude in the department was crucial as well. They made sure that Gaelic was heard, not just seen, in the building and wasn't treated as an academic curio, but as the living culture it is. I think it is safe to say that that's where I got radicalised, in a good way."

The Gaelic department, and the Uni's incomparable Gaelic Officer @Fi_Dunn really made the difference. In my second year I stayed in @TaighNaGaidhlig the fantastic Gaelic accommodation scheme, and nothing comes close to the difference the two years I spent in TnG made to my Gaelic."
