For years I've been told that aviation emissions are negligible, so don't worry your little head about them. But I've kept pointing out that there are - and will be - no good technical solutions, and they'll keep growing. Now we know just how big the problem is. www.carbonbrief.org/ccc-heathrow...

If you feel like donating to the RNLI, here’s a link. I just have. Their minimum donation is £2: I think it might be nice for them to receive a lot of donations this week, even if they’re mostly very modest. Just so they know a lot of people out here appreciate their work. rnli.org/support-us/g...

People in Europe are experiencing wildfires in places and at scale that most people have never experienced. Some really good advice in this thread. Also, I cannot stress enough how much everyone should have an emergency bag. Loads of info online on what to put in it, but you should have one.

Crystal Gazing xkcd.com/3243/
Comic. [Person who looks like a wizard, dressed in robe with tall pointy hat and with long beard, standing in front of chart, proclaiming to another person.] PERSON 1: By gazing into my crystals of zircon, I have divined the date of the hour of fire marking the limit of this world’s existence. 4.54 billion years ago, the beginning was nigh! Neutrino Project xkcd.com/3249/
Comic. [Huge pool, with two people walking on the edge together, one jumping off a diving board, and others playing with a beach ball inside the pool as two people in the center of the pool talk.] PERSON 1 with ponytail: How much trouble do you think we’ll be in when they find out we used the Neutrino Project grant money to throw a huge pool party instead? PERSON 2: We could argue that we *did* build a neutrino detector. There’s a lot of water here. A solar neutrino will probably interact with it at *some* point. Person 1: ...Wait. Actually, if we got some photomultiplier tubes... [caption] How The Neutrino Detector Was Invented
