Someone took our released sources and ported Chaos Theory to an AmigaOne X1000! So technically, we have now released an Amiga intro!

Oh and we had to do this because unreal is inherently non-embeddable into another process. A truly modular system would enable stuff like this. And we can't expand their textureshare plugin because the engine core wouldn't be aware of our plugin's name. And these are small things.

I once had to go into its guts to expose the gbuffer via shared textures to a separate process. Couldn't be done without a separate engine branch. Then epic created the textureshare plugin to do this and even they had to hardcode awareness of their specific plugin into the core engine.

Sure. All 300+ MBytes and 28000+ files of engine source code of it (not counting thirdparties and autogenerated stuff), spanning 20+ years of layered architecture spaghetti and "sounded good at the time but we're now stuck with it for good" fallout. It's a monster. Expanding it nontrivially is hell.

BoyC’s Law of thirdparty Libraries: “A thirdparty library building according to the readme and functioning out of the box is a deceptively rare exception to the rule.” Strong form to use when budgeting for integration: “No thirdparty library builds out of the box.”

Chaos Theory turns 20 years old today! 🎂 To know that even to this day we get people from all walks of life telling us how fond they're of it is honestly incredible to us. Got good memories about the intro? Where did you see it first? Let us know! www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfk5...

It's our own ui engine written from scratch. Fonts on the first screenshot are some random windows built-in fonts, code uses tobiasjung.name/profont/ and the second screenshot uses fonts.google.com/specimen/Inter for the ui font. Previous generation ui engine code: github.com/ConspiracyHu...

It's not immune. There's a debate going on in the scene about this. Orgas have no way of telling if some compiled code was vibe coded and there's no way of knowing if the tooling used ai. PC 64ks aren't coded in assembly anymore and 4ks are mostly just a glsl delivery mechanism (again not immune).

One part of this experiment is to see what frame people are going to be thinking in, it's deliberately omitted :)

Small survey on coordinate intuitions. You have an object on the screen, its position defined by the X, Y, Z coordinates. Which direction does your intuition say it will move in if you increase the X coordinate? What about increasing Y and Z? Which directions are the positive and negative?

The ability to reorganize taskbar items inside groups or even to split the groups would be much appreciated. When I’m working in multiple instances of an app and one of them closes for whatever reason and I need to reopen it, it opens at the end of the group and the original order is lost.

Here's a small feature you didn't know you needed in your code editor: visual feedback for when you copy stuff to the clipboard. It's a simple thing but once you get used to it you'll start missing it everywhere else. Implemented as a Visual Studio plugin (not VSCode). github.com/BoyC/CopyHig...

Super surprised how fast Vera picked up the ins and outs of my demotool. I see great things ahead! Well done for 4th place in the largest 64k compo in recent memory!

In short: it's good in bridging together boilerplate and various thirdparty libs but iterating slowly accumulates dead features and old code which in time poisons the context and the project becomes unmaintainable. So it's great for quick prototypes but don't rely on it in production in this state.

BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 07/04/2026
Having just done such a small project with ai myself as an experiment I have to agree. A shift in the next generation of programmers is coming and I have no idea how it will look - but it's scary.

My 4k executable graphics entry for Revision 2026 that came in 2nd. Created using an editor built as an experiment to see if current AI is capable of building tooling for smaller things like SDF editing. Consensus: prototyping - yes. Long term maintainable tooling - no. www.pouet.net/prod.php?whi...

The collection is growing. Very proud of Slyspy for his first ever meteorik for best visuals and am glad that all the work with Tension last year was rewarded with a best high-end intro award as well. Awesome party as always, @revision-party.bsky.social!

The direction is one thing but even as a full blown demo the amount of content in that video would be pretty baller :D 64k does have its limits :D

My version of "googling yourself": every now and again I ask LLMs what they know about our demogroup Conspiracy (without googling). We're just obsucre enough to be known but not in detail so it's a good check to see how much info these systems gobble up over time. I feel like such a tool now...

Every so often we get asked why don't we use our 64k tech to make a game, or give it to people to improve existing games, and it's very hard to explain that That's Not How It Works.

Ever found a couple thousand bucks between the sofa cushions? That's how we felt last night when toggling a single compiler flag shrunk our 64k engine code by 20%. Moral of the story: don't assume anything when moving compilers in a size-coding context.

Hello everyone who found us through this starter pack recently 👋 We're a Hungarian demogroup and we've been making 64 kilobyte intros for 20+ years now, using our own procedural tooling that looks/looked like this 👇

Yeah that’s more inline with the bugged behavior that prompted me to create this solution.

Also obviously i’m talking about using the remapped copilot button as the ctrl key in these situations, not the original ctrl.

BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 27/08/2025
Very odd, anything I tried ignored any shift press. What’s the key combination you had to use in powertoys? And what system?

BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 27/08/2025
Shift-ctrl-tab tab switching and shift-ctrl-arrow key text selection works as well? (Both when shift is pressed first and when ctrl is pressed first?)

I'm still holding out where I can, but the new laptop doesn't have win10 drivers anymore, so that's another negative. I did see some third-party hacks to move the taskbar to the side and they help a bit but it's far from optimal.

BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 26/08/2025
This is not about AI. It's about standard expected hardware functionality (a damn right-ctrl button) being replaced by a random feature without the option to revert it.
140
BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 26/08/2025
Ah yes you can do that but mapping it to what you'd expect to be there is an afterthought :D
010
BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 26/08/2025
Not if you want to keep shift+ctrl support intact in my experience. Could be that different vendors implement it differently but at least on my laptop the shift key was swallowed up with powertoys.

BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 26/08/2025
Oh don't get me started on the lack of a vertical taskbar.

BoyC @boyc.conspiracy.hu · 26/08/2025
This specific laptop is an Asus TUF A14 and from what I've seen it's pretty dominant across their whole lineup. The fact that there isn't even a bios setting to change the behavior and the button just sends a random key combination is pure lunacy.
