If we’re cool with an unqualified HHS director, skip RFK Jr. — give me Noah Wyle.

I know that there are exceptions to this, but they generally are the exceptions that prove the rule.

The amount of entitlement contained in people who have hereditary wealth never ceases to amaze me. Instead of helping those around them, or helping to better the world for everyone, they spend their energy thinking of new ways to hold on to what they have, and not share anything new that they gain.

Why is anything Woody Allen does of note to anyone?

We all need to recalibrate our normal detectors.

A tumblr screen capture:

Tumblr user charlesoberonn:

Heartwarming story: Little girl doesn’t have to do anything to fund her dad’s surgery because his expenses are covered by his country’s universal healthcare.

Tumblr user charlesoberonn:

Human determination: Man bikes 18 miles to work every morning because he wants to and not because he can’t afford a car and would be fired if he’s late.

Tumblr user charlesoberonn:

Spirit of Brotherhood: Neighbors host housewarming party for elderly resident who doesn’t need help in paying rent because his pension is more than enough.

Tumblr user hyperlexichypatia:

SO INSPIRING: Local middle school students bake dozens of cupcakes because their home economics class is doing a baking unit. Their school is fully funded with everything they need.

This feels like calibrating my normal detector

I lived in a diverse neighborhood where if you did that you’d find yourself in the middle of an impromptu block party with everyone trying to get everyone else to try their food. It was lovely

You know what I don’t get? So many fundamentalist religions teach that men can’t control themselves sexually, but at the same time they teach that women can’t be leaders.

No lie, my friend cared for an elderly man who never married and lived with his mother and then his sisters until he was the only one left, and was utterly floored when I suggested that he might have been gay.

To ensure that we have an advantage over the descendants of those who were wronged. When the world watched a black man being murdered by police in 2020, I did what I could to support the protests and amplify the voices of the marginalized. My people are also furious, and we are not going to allow

I was born in the winter of 1972 and raised in Pennsylvania. My cohort of citizens was told that we had to work hard to dismantle injustice when we saw it rather than sit back and feel wounded that society had evolved and recognized that past wrongs need to be atoned for rather than continuing

Many USians can’t read a map anyway. Locations are limited to three categories. “Home” - the general area they live in and are familiar with. “Nearby” - which encompasses their state and possibly neighboring states. And “Away” which is foreign to them and vaguely threatening.

Operator in a factory, I know that industry and those machines. If that factory lays me off, finding another job that pays the same or better is nearly impossible.

000

Jessica Atchison @bowenknits.bsky.social · 05/07/2025

Without further schooling which costs money I don’t have if I’m unemployed. I can, of course go further into debt in the hopes that additional credentials will land me a job, but that doesn’t always pay off. The same is true of “unskilled” labor. If I’ve worked for 20 years as a machine 4/5

100

Jessica Atchison @bowenknits.bsky.social · 05/07/2025

Change industries. I’m a bookkeeper. It’s what I know, it’s what I’ve done my whole working life. If there are no open bookkeeping positions, I’m capable of other office type work, but none of those jobs pay what bookkeeping does, and I’m not capable of the jobs that pay the same or more 3/4

100

Jessica Atchison @bowenknits.bsky.social · 05/07/2025

Because eventually that cushion runs out, and you were no doubt living like you were always going to have that paycheck so you got bills to pay and mouths to feed too. Jobs are scarce across all industries regardless of the party line of “nobody wants to work”. For one thing, it isn’t easy to 2/3

100

Jessica Atchison @bowenknits.bsky.social · 05/07/2025

Why do people do this? Unemployment sucks whether you’re a lifelong “unskilled” laborer (don’t get me started on “unskilled”) or a highly trained technical expert. Getting laid off or fired is terrifying, whether you’re one missed payday from being unhoused, or you have a cushion to live on (1/2)
