Would love to see a proposal for how to handle miniapp auth in an ATProto world. Farcaster made this seamless and delightful as a UX because auth was based on signatures the client could perform using its private key. OAuth is a non-starter here for clean miniapp UX

The intent of my post is to ponder the idea of fully decoupling from DNS using a P2P proto for the atproto repository event stream and the image containing iroh was just an example I made up to convey this idea in the DID Doc. Do you have any thoughts on what proto/form a P2P entry should take?

The anti-spam framing is from their proposed FAQ. Agree that it isn't an anti-spam feature in the "receiving undesired invitations" sense of the word. But, it is a deterrent for a spammer to register a large number of accounts for the purpose of spamming. Stopping the spam itself is much harder.

Good to see Signal decouple from phone numbers. Is a one time fee of $3 enough to prevent spammers from registering Signal accounts? 👀

I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-ope…

Nobody pays for open source. We can force them to. | Seldo.com
Thirty years of voluntary funding schemes haven't paid open source maintainers because asking doesn't scale. The real money already flows — to JFrog, Docker, Sonatype — at the registry layer. The fix: registries charge companies for supply (they already do), then route a slice automatically to the maintainers who make that supply worth having.

I'm curious how much existing laws can help in this new world of AI / robots 🤖 If I program a robot to break into your house and steal your fruit bowl, I assume I can be charged for breaking and entering. What if I prompted my autonomous robot to go pick me some fruit and it chose this tactic?

SMS and calls are HTTP Unencrypted. Logged. Interceptable. Plaintext on a carrier server like it’s 1998. We’re building the HTTPS: same number or use an atproto handle 🫨, same plan, E2EE private messenger, builtin spam prevention. The network carries it. Nobody opens it. Launching soon 👀

this sounds a bit like a troll Along the dimensions of "decentralized" that matter for user agency of their digital identity, DNS isn't even worth an honorable mention. If you want practical censorship resistance there are better options than both - using tech that rhymes with "grip toe"

chrisb @boscolo.co · 19/08/2026
it sucks that FC doesn’t support DNS, it’s what business use as brand on the Internet It also sucks that atproto ONLY supports DNS today, because it’s not censorship resistant The good news is it’s technically easy to add ENS to atproto, just requires getting consensus 😅

chrisb @boscolo.co · 19/08/2026
two very smart teams worked on this problem and came to the same conclusion involving two layers: 1️⃣ persistent (not rented like ENS) decentralized account ID layer (focuses on managing custody keys) 2️⃣ naming layer (swap over time, or have many) if that didn't convince you, I don't think I can.

chrisb @boscolo.co · 19/08/2026
Why would it be better to deploy "their own id contract" instead of using one that is already in use today? ENS is a different layer of the solution and not suitable as the decentralized account ID layer that did:plc/did:web solve in atproto.

chrisb @boscolo.co · 19/08/2026
To add one more layer of clarification. In my did:fid proposal, Farcaster signers are not used in atproto. Instead, it proposes an additional smart contract for the atproto data including the verificationMethod of the DID. (This to atproto what signers are in FC.) blog.boscolo.co/3lyxzeejguk2...

Solving AT Protocol's Centralized Identity - blog.boscolo.co

ATSMS = AT Secure Messaging Service When I saw the links to the modems, I thought you were going to comment on the name collision with the Hayes AT command set.😅 We're open to a rename. But first, I'd rather see more get involved to help drive ATSMS as a community standard (and rename if desired).

Does "member that dropped out" mean offline or remove? A member that goes offline has an inbox that retains the cipher text allowing it to replay the causal log, re-derive each epoch & run the ratchets forward A removed and re-added member doesn't see the history from the window they were out

chrisb @boscolo.co · 17/08/2026
That plus "identity" is the core of the dependency. "identity" == AT Protocol DID as well as profile information. I don't specifically mention the dependency on the profile info in that article, because apps built on ATSMS can do what they want. But, most will expect their handle/profile to match 🦋
