I grew up in the USSR when our leaders were going into the semi-vegetative state. I vividly remember the mix of cringe, pity and contempt when I saw old Brezhnev or Chernenko. Why did they torture this sick old man with public appearances? Now I look at Mitch and feel the same

Other nations think it is a good idea to exchange their raw materials, manufactured goods, food, even talents of their people for these portraits. And the president thinks it means they win, and wants to stop it. Brilliant, sir. Absolutely brilliant. 2/2

Let me get it straight. We print portraits of dead presidents (now mostly electronically). It costs us nothing to print them, only we can do it, and the only limitation is that we do not want to devalue them. 1/2

Allen's career was over. Virginia never pressed R in presidential elections since. Now, in 2006 the state had drifted left for some time, and probably would become bluer anyway. However, Allen evidently accelerated the change 7/7

"So it was not a random slur, but the usual name for us among your staffers?" It turned out that an important part of GOP coalition in Virginia were conservative prosperous Asians. Now they were shown what the rest of the party thinks about them. 6/7

"If GOP sees him as a monkey, what do they think about all of us?" asked Indians. Allen tried to explain that he thought Macaca was the student's name. Evidently he overheard the staffers calling him this and did not know about monkeys. This enraged Indians even more. 5/7

Sidarth was Indian. This phrase quickly spread over the Indian community. The thing was, Sidarth was a textbook case of a prosperous American of Indian origin. Graduated from a competitive high school, joined a prestigious university, started a career in politics. 4/7

Once at a town hall Allen said, pointing to him, "This fellow over here with the yellow shirt — Macaca or whatever his name is — he's with my opponent... Let's give a welcome to Macaca here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." 3/7

GOP senator Allen cruised to reelection and nursed presidential ambitions. S. R. Sidarth was a student volunteering for the Dem campaign. He followed Allen's town halls and filmed them— the usual practice during elections, when campaigns look for sound bites. 2/7

Bo French's tweet reminds me of the events happened 20 years ago in Virginia. When one unfortunate word changed history. At that time Virginia voted R in presidential elections since 1968 (even since 1952 with one exception for the landslide defeat of Goldwater in 1964) 1/7

My political views are quite opposite to those of Giorgia Meloni. Nevertheless I cannot help noticing this. Trump boasted about powerful people kissing his ass: MBS, Zuckerberg, Bezos. And they all decided to eat the insult. It took a strong woman to tell Trump to stuff it.

The majestic Reflecting Pool is covered by slime after Trump's renovation. The apologists say, it is due to algae dormant in the old pipes. I do not know whether it is true, but what a perfect metaphor! All the rot dormant in our system is now in full bloom.

Some turns in the play seem to be outlandish, but a quick check shows they are historically correct. This reminds of "The Death of Stalin" by Ianucci, where the most absurd details are the most accurate. A great play for our times 4/4
