🚗💨As cars cruise on roads, they’re not just burning fuel, but driving massive demand for steel. Most of that steel is made with coal. The cost? Communities choking on pollution, facing higher risk diseases—even dying. With the IAA car show ongoing, the carmakers must start demanding #GreenSteel.

The nexus between trade and industry is a hot topic for the coming months. We responded to the EU Commission's call for evidence on #CBAM with a 5-point submission, demanding that it will not be turned into a pure protectionist and trade defence measure.

⛓️The transition for European #GreenSteel is not cheap but we cannot say that the money is not there. What is needed now is the political will to make it happen and an industrial willingness to accept that business as usual will not save the sector. @borisjankowiak.bsky.social writes ➡️

🔎Spotlight on steel at @europarl.europa.eu again this week. 🩺The diagnosis of European steel industry's trouble is widely shared but proposals for treatment vary. 🏭Current coal-based production model is incompatible with our climate targets and competitiveness endeavours = not at all future-proof.

The State of the European Steel Transition
Every euro of public funds should drive a fair transition for workers and communities, cut the reliance on fossil fuels and accelerate renewables-based and circular steel production.

In case you missed it: join us tomorrow for the launch event of a report on the state of the steel transition, with a great panel! The difference with the late Steel and Metals Action Plan? This report brings the voice of civil society, often too less represented in industrial policy talks.

After the publication this morning of civil society's report on the transition of the steel sector, the Commission has released its Steel and Metals Action Plan (#SMAP). A short hot take:

Quite a day for steel, with the steel and metals action plan awaited today #SMAP. But you might have missed this info from your news outlets this morning: civil society also has something to say on the steel sector's transition to ensure that the journey brings public benefits along the way:

A transparent and fair transition for steel cannot do without a large participation from organisations representing public interests: social rights and environmental and climate protection. Read @caneurope.org Director's take on the recent "dialogue" for the future of the steel sector.

Boris Jankowiak @borisjankowiak.bsky.social · 04/03/2025
Alleged presence of civil society, but none of the organisations working towards a socially just and climate-proof transition of the sector for public interest has been invited. This worsens the corporate capture of industrial policy at EU level and jeopardises a fair and inclusive transition.

Today was marked in everyone's calendar in the EU policy space. Read our own @caneurope.org reactions on the 3-course meal presented by the Commission. A lot to unpack: despite good narrative elements on circularity, climate and decarbonisation, the only concrete milestone remains deregulation.

EU is negotiating on a new long-term budget this year. Commission's roadmap to the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) leaves a gap in mobilising additional finance, crucial for the transition to climate-neutral economy based on renewables and the 'hot topic', European competitiveness.
“Without a strong investment mobilisation at the EU level, even the EU’s big plan, the Clean Industrial Deal, is bound to fail.”
Olivier Vardakoulias, Finance and Subsidies Policy Coordinator
at Climate Action Network (CAN) EuropeThe toxic combination:
1. EU’s flawed fiscal rules that are constraining the capacity of Member States to invest in the climate and energy transition
2. End of the Next Generation EU instrument, leaving €300 billion finance gap for delivering climate and Green Deal targets over the next EU budget cycle

We urgently need a vision and roadmap for a new joint borrowing instrument to replace Next Generation EU, backed by additional socially progressive pan-European taxes, to complement the regular MFF over the 2028-34 cycle. We need:
- Minimum a €2 trillion-strong EU budget, composed of a €1 trillion green investment plan dedicated just to protecting our environment, phasing out fossil fuels, and ensuring the green transition benefits everyone.
- Expanding renewable energy capacity, storage and grids, building more public transport infrastructure, investing in genuine green technologies, climate resilience and circularity, and more whilst supporting people who are struggling with the cost of living crisis.
- Scaling up international climate finance through increased funding for external action, reinforcing multilateralism, supporting partner countries and communities to decarbonise, adapting to escalating impacts and addressing devastating losses and damages."The next long-term EU budget is the EU’s make-or-break moment for the next decade. It will determine whether Europe chooses to accelerate or stall ambitious climate action and a socially just energy transition. The reality is clear: Europe’s ‘competitiveness’, jobs and socio-economic resilience depend on leading the transition to a climate-neutral economy based on renewable energies, not delaying it."

This is nice, but it's not great 1) It's 1 train a day. By comparison 🇧🇪🇳🇱 just added 16 extra trains a day between Bruxelles and Rotterdam 2) 8 hours is more than most people will spend on a train 3) Upping Frankfurt-Paris from the current 6x a day to at least 12x would be much better

(oh and while there are some tickets for €59, the chances you get that price are rather low. But the price is not really the problem here - we *do not have enough capacity on France-Germany long distance routes* - that's what needs fixing, not 1x a day Paris-Berlin)

The climate crisis can’t wait – European steelmakers like ArcelorMittal must seize the opportunity now to lead the transition to renewables-based steel.

Decarbonisation of the steel sector has not yet happened, but 3 billion € are available. Today, the EU still produces CO2-intensive primary steel but tomorrow we do need a future proof and competitive steel industry for quality jobs. This anyway means a cleaner production, and stalling won't help.

panel one is a stick figure saying "oh! a fossil fuel!!" standing above a crudely drawn black lump under a brown ground

Panel two is them walking away and saying "I'll just leave it there"

The head of the person is not a drawn circle but the letter O, because the random software I used to draw it did that for unexplained reasons
