There is a proAI/anti-regulation sub on Reddit where a lot of folks have genuinely expressed the belief that AI advancement will quickly lead to immortality. One could say they have FAITH in AI and its creators and feel their faith would be rewarded with ETERNAL LIFE.

No, they’re doing well on every single issue. Republicans used to be +12 nationally on immigration. Almost all those races are close to a split, and in the state where immigration is the most materially an issue, it is a split. They’re doing well on the topic.

Just saying these two goobers having a podcast conversation where they talk shit about a rape victim and then whine about the nerdiest looking dude joking about pretend violence for them doing so would be unrecognizable as masculinity to men like him who they supposedly look towards.

Not that men were like so much better in the past. But there is a story in my family of my great aunt being abused and my grandfather and his brothers beating up the guy and putting a gun in his mouth to make him disappear. Not saying that’s good.

The Weiss Cut where Superman apologizes to the evil dictator guy, murders the little boy himself, and then shakes Lex Luthor’s hand.

Please— respond to this questions: how SHOULD you teach an eight year old what area is? How SHOULD you teach an eight year old multi digit addition? How SHOULD you teach an eight year old subtraction?

Also I saw Stoles gassing you up with some horeshit about “remembering and memorization” being disregarded. I have never seen that on display. Even constructivist educators recognize that remembering is important. Like Bloom’s lists it as the foundation of thinking.

You’re mistaking explicit instruction and exploration as being things that are in competition to each other. They’re not. It’s a magic trick dude. I as a math teacher KNOW the strategies I’m going to teach the kids, but I’m going to use discussion and debate and student work to get there.

Your onion metaphor is absurd. Like teaching kids using a ten frame IS one of the best ways to teach addition when you cross over ten. I, a middle aged woman, should not use a ten frame to count 6+17. But a ten frame helps build understanding to get there.

You’re talking yourself into anti-woke stance on this when the reality is that a teacher directly teaching to kids, trying to hammer home one strategy is often the norm for how kids are being taught. It’s what’s happening and it doesn’t work, for fundamental math instruction.

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Matt— you don’t know what you’re talking about and I think Stokes might be closer to being the Lucy Caulkins of math then you think. A lot of strong mathematicians don’t actually understand how to teach math.
110
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Doing quick estimates in your head requires conceptual knowledge of place value and seeing patterns in the math (“If 7+8=15 then 37+8=45”) it requires the ability to decompose numbers and sort large numbers into groups.

This was I kinda think Sold a Story is sort of a shitty podcast. It has left people with simplistic take away. Explicit phonics instruction IS really important. But so is vocabulary and background knowledge. How to properly teach those is trickier. Remember SOR is a body of knowledge.

I think it’s interesting in that it’s pretty obvious to me that AI is not conscious but like some people think it might and apparently there are just a bunch of us who are totally fine with us creating life end enslaving it.

Like Matt, not to be mean, but you don't know what you're talking about. If you genuinely think the column B stuff is bad then you need to not write about education.
010
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Do you understand that when you ask a kid to do 17+19 that you "Carry the one" they don't necessarily understand the 1 represents a ten? So you use strategies that teach them application of place value that allow them to do the math in their heads?
100
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And I know that's not your intent, but you just smugly think you know what you're talking about and just please accept on this specific subject, you currently don't know what the fuck you're talking about and should learn more.
000
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And they also don't know what they're talking about, but are parroting back ignorant shit like you're posting. PLEASE, do not post about education. Please do not write about it. You're coming in here showing your ass fighting AGAINST critical thinking and kids debating each other with this shit.
100
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Like if you genuinely stand by this post, on this topic, you need to just accept that you're a currently basically a fucking idiot on this. And like that's fine. But please do not go post some blog about this shit. You have folks in the mentions smugly going "memorization is how kids learn math"
100
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Like I think you're a knowledgeable guy who gets huffy that sometimes people come at you with flawed data. But please understand from the third grade teacher who pushed kids to be on grade level and gives HW even when the parents complain, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
100
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
That doesn't mean that there aren't some things like imperial units or more complicated math in older grades that doesn't require just straight memorization at some level and following a formula. But everyday math skills flourish in your column B mindsets, not column A.

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Do you understand some concepts like circumference for example can be literally taught to a three year old with some diameter tape and a tree trunk? Like yeah bro, you can use exploration to understand and face concepts before fully understanding them.
100
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
You understand a lot of kids actually don't understand that subtraction is not always used to abstracting taking away things and you can use addition to find difference? Like a kid just knowing how to do a simple subtraction equation does not tell them what difference means. So you use numberlines?
100
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And part of it is because every day he came into my class and he spoke confidently as fuck and told other kids why something was true and PROVED it. And you're arguing that that is fucking bad teaching? Do you know how enriching it is for a struggling kid to realize something before everyone else?
100
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
But like you're pooping on discussion? Bro-- it's debate. I had kids debate the best strategies. Debate what the answer was. Support their answers with evidence. Analyze and refute incorrect strategies. I had a strong mathematician who started at a kinder reading level pass his state tests...

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And I also did daily multiplication quizzes and songs to make them just memorize the times table. But that was in support of the actual critical thinking. Like you're pooping on discussion. Bro-- I HAD KIDS DEBATING EACH OTHER. The thing people like you say they should do.
000
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And like don't get me wrong. I drilled kids with 1 minute times table quizzes everyday. I played root memorization times table songs every morning and forced them to sing along. Remember, the woke parents hate me. I have HW. I was a hardass and I have the data...
110
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I first give them other skills that give them a conceptual understanding of what length times width means. It's why using arrays to teach multiplication is better than just times table memorization. It's teaching area and other multiplication concepts in an intuitive and visual way...

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
It doesn't allow a kid to actually know what area is. Actually grabbing some post it notes and measuring how many post it notes fill a surface does teach you area. And it's not that I don't teach the kids to multiply length by width...
220
Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
...but on this you're like a fucking idiot. Every belief you are pissing on is how I got kids to grow. Let me explain in practice: Take area. Column A is saying I should teach kids "You get area by taking the length and multiplying it by the width." And while that will get you a correct answer...

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Please actually read this and not as some Bluesky whining. I don't mean you're wrong in the sense that I disagree with you from like some woke pov or whatever. I mean that you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about and you should not talk about education. I know you're a smart person...

I was a 3rd grade math teacher who took a class of below grade level students and got them on grade level. I'm a former middle school teacher who taught during Covid, biking books to kids in the rain and had students who GREW during Covid. I'm a teacher woke patents complained about-- YOU'RE WRONG

"Fucks transplants" is shorthand for being salty when someone who lives in NYC for five minutes is calling ever deli and corner store a bodega and lecturing someone whose family lived there for generations what it means to be a New Yorker or being an asshole and proclaiming they're a real New Yorker

In March Rutgers has him at 37% approval on immigration, 21% approval with independents, and 11% with Dems. And that's not much higher than his overall approval at the time. A Yougov poll from last year had most Americans wanting Garcia returned. Trumps polling for immigration fell during the fiasco

But they did oppose it? That’s part of why the Biden administration shelved it for a second term that never happened. But this is also not recognizing that once again there was a compromise proposal from the Democratic leader that many activists were okay settling on.

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
But we’re just going in circles here right? Like my whole point is trans inclusion and trans youth pathways have existed for years without the pushback from today.

what I’m asking for is 1) Acknowledgement that clearly these things were not as salient a wedge issue 2) I think folks need to understand that progress often just isn’t linear. Broader LGBT lib. faced similar times of backlash 3) We at one point have to be specific on policies and consequences

I’m sorry but the President of the United States Joe Biden had a rule that would have allowed trans bans, the HRC signaled support, and I saw little celebration from opponents to trans inclusion. Advocates and the Dems have been willing to compromise for years.

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I would suggest meeting folks halfway though. I think the fictional “gay marriage happened and then the transes asked for too much” story creates segregation. You and I agree on principle, but I ask you to consider that when we ask folks to accept losing things they won we need to ask with grace.

But that nuance isn’t made by critics. Like The Atlantic ran a whole piece that prominently featured a trans volleyball player who played for years without controversy and it’s really hard to argue she actually had an advantage. Yes— identity based inclusion is wrong depending on the context.

I’m not dying the hill of sports inclusion and I support some bans at minimum. But nothing is going to be learned if we don’t accept reality. Some trans sports inclusion WAS successfully argued for with little controversy. They did win the argument. The blanket bans are the social change.

Shelley Lanchester @boringtrans.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I think that what is frustrating for trans advocates is quotes like this that refuse to acknowledge history. There was little controversy when trans inclusion was introduced 15 years ago to the NCAA. Trump and Devos discussed plans to allow some trans participation. This is relitigation.

I’ll show you. “Erin has well rooted concerns. Right now the dangers to our immigrant and Black/Brown neighbors are real, and must be stopped. Also from a practical pov, I think there is good reason to believe these candidates could still prove positive for trans Americans. But hey it’s your choice”

I was told the issue with trans liberation is that we scolds who shamed everyone. I disageee with @erininthemorning.com . I think for multiple reasons you should vote for the current anti-trans Dems. And I can say that with my chest without being a whiny bitch like @whstancil.bsky.social

When I worked in education a Black educator said something that I have carried with me, “Don’t tell me you’re an ally. Be an ally, and let me decide. Because to me it’s not enough to say the right thing. To me it’s when the chips are down and YOU have something to lose, will you still stand by me.”

AI isn’t bad on principle we just need standards for how it’s used. My fear is that there is a lot of propaganda right now to fight any of those standards from taking hold. Like there is genuine degradantation on the very idea of process or discovery in art. A lot of it prob astroturfed, for now

A lower amount of Black/Brown parents are explicitly pro-vaccine. Hesitancy exists in those communities. It’s just that people who all in against vaccinations are much more likely to be white. There just are people who are hesitant, not informed, but chill the fuck out. Those folks aren’t MAHA.
