And I know that in common usage "nostalgia" has come to mean "liking something that you grew up with" more broadly, and while I wouldn't "um akshually" anyone for using it that way I do think a more formal definition might be better to describe what you're talking about in this case.

My understanding of nostalgia is that it's like a longing for a time past, so being nostalgic for media is different from genuinely holding a deep appreciation of it on its own merits. To me "nostalgia" means "liking something because it's familiar," so in that way I do think it's the wrong word.

true! I was also thinking about the Metro games and some other FPSes which (sometimes optionally) make you check your remaining ammo by having your character pull out the magazine to physically look at it.

I feel like something a lot of people don't realize is that horror can actually become a lot more effective if you give the player occasional moments of feeling safe and/or powerful to contrast with the constant fight for survival. A shotgun with limited ammo can often do exactly that.

If anyone is getting smacked with this - just use deer.social or another alternate client. Bsky is just an AT Protocol Client, and your Bsky account is an AT Protocol account - you can use your same Bsky account thru another AT Protocol Client, no migration or loss necessary. Could not be easier.

to be fair "the male gaze" generally refers to sexualization of women so I don't think it's too much of a leap to assume "female gaze" would refer to sex appeal for women. Definitely doesn't sound like what Jacob meant here though, but it is the obvious joke to make. People love low hanging fruit.

I always see people point out how Goofy is a dog and Pluto is a dog and that it's weird that one is anthropomorphized while the other isn't, but to me it's always just felt like the difference between a human and a chimp. I see Goofy as a sort of Canis Sapiens while Pluto is just Canis Familiaris.

Recently I've started playing through the Choro-Q series and Im having a blast! They're interesting semi-arcadey racing games with a kind of RPG-like upgrade system, and honestly they beat the crap out of a lot of modern AAA racing games.

so selling less units at a bit of a markup even with the economics being a bit fucky makes sense, especially since their main goals are likely to encourage other companies to build similar machines to compete with theirs and to help advance the development and adoption of a more user friendly Linux.

They could probably afford to eat that kind of loss but they'd still need some kind of incentive to do so. A console-like Linux machine just isn't destined to disrupt the entire console market over night, and they don't even need the Steam Machine to be a runaway success for their bottom line...

How would selling more units at a loss translate to a profit? The majority of people buying a Steam Machine are getting their games on Steam already, and unlike with Xbox of Sony people don't need a SM to buy and play Steam games nor will they need to use Steam to get games to play on their SM.

Unfortunately it's not that easy for everyone. I know a few people with specific eye problems that prevent them from seeing these no matter what they've tried. For me though I just cross my eyes and slowly uncross them until the image starts showing up.

I really just have to summarize Thomas's entire life:

• He was in a committed relationship with a male swan named Henry for 18-24 years before a female swan named Henrietta showed up and mated with Henry.
• Thomas was initially jealous of the pair and attacked them, breaking 2 of the 5 eggs Henrietta had laid. However, once the remaining eggs hatched, Thomas warmed up to them and helped raise them.
• Henry couldn't fly because of an injured wing, so Thomas taught the cygnets how to fly.
• When they needed to reduce the goose population in the pond where Thomas and the swans lived, they dyed Thomas's feathers red so he wouldn't be separated from Henry.
• Henry, Henrietta, and Thomas remained in their happy throuple for years and raised 68 cygnets before Henry died in 2009. After Henry's death, Henrietta found another swan and flew away, leaving Thomas alone.
•Thomas finally met and mated with a female goose in 2011 and had his own babies. However, another goose named George stole them and raised them himself.
• As Thomas grew elderly and blind, he was relocated to a wildlife center where he raised orphaned cygnets.
• His caretaker at the center described him as "pretty high maintenance."
• Thomas died in 2018 at the age of around 40. He had a funeral that included a small coffin and a procession that was led by a bagpiper.
He was buried under the stone where Henry was buried, the two finally reunited in death.
• Before and after his death, Thomas has been celebrated as an icon of the LGBTQ+ community for obvious reasons.
