I'm sorry I called the car a diva! It has since died (after getting a full tank of gas), and hopefully we'll learn that it's only mostly dead...

This morning's message from Indivisible
Your vote is not small to the people spending millions to make sure you never cast it. They know what happens when working people, young people, women, and every fed-up voter show up together. We flip Congress. They lose control. That’s the whole assignment.

Good morning #IthacaFarmersMarket! It's a lovely day for a market, sunny, bright, and just warm enough. We're down in booth 78, next to the yummy Cambodian food.
A panoramic photo of a wooden booth full of leather goods. Off to the left are bracelets, belts, and hair pins. In the middle are bracers, bags, and critters. Off to the right are fox tails and acorns.

I fear I have made a @scalzi.com level abomination for breakfast. It's leftover lo mein, fried with an egg, wrapped in a tortilla and seasoned with Japanese bbq sauce. It's not a burrito, but I'm considering it huevos rancheros, sorta kinda?

An ink piece from a bygone October.
A house made from a pumpkin. A witch stands on top of it, watering her garden that hangs in hats from a branch on the side of the pumpkin. Drawn with sepia ink.

"There are hundreds of reasons why the check engine light comes on; only your mechanic is qualified to address this. Reasons include a loose fuel cap, excess vibration, a blocked cylinder, a bad fuel mix, excessive heat and half power. This may also highlight an issue with your transmission."

Love when @ltimonin.bsky.social's car decides to be a diva and throw minor error code tantrums. I also love that the check engine light, in this, the year of grace 2026, can mean everything from "get out now, the car is going to explode" to "waah, take me to the mechanic for coddling!".

I teach US History surveys in rotation, and am a WWII historian per my dissertation. I've forgotten the (dates of) Alamo, Pearl Harbor, and DDay. History is not about remembering dates and names; we have writing for that!

My students didn't do AP history - that's why they're in my class - and I do my best to turn them into History majors, or at least minors. Ironically, we have less funding and more adjuncts (like me) than the big four year schools with the 100+ student seminars.

The place where you get this type of class as a non-major undergrad, at least in the US, is at a community college. None of my classes have more than 30 students (and usually fewer than 20). They're still survey courses, but I center discussion.

And, critically, it's a Canadian ritual - American engineers don't do it (unless they graduated from a Canadian university). I think that leads to takes like the one we're looking at.

Good morning #IthacaFarmersMarket! We're in booth 22 today. It's a breezy day with a threat of rain, and frankly, it's a little cold! It's also Apple Fest downtown, so crowds here might be reduced; not a bad time to visit! We're across from coffee and next to yummy Thai food.

Sometimes I'll put names on, sometimes I won't. Often, I'll just give broad role suggestions - beyond class, like Leverage "hitter, hacker, grifter" etc. I did do the following names for a Halloween one shot: Fred Jones Norville Rogers Daphne Blake Velma Dinkley Dog

Ah. Yeaaaah. I've got some games on my boardgame shelf that don't get played because they needed a sensitivity reader. There ARE ways to do historically accurate games about problematic topics - and, actually, RttP might still be a good place to start - they have guidelines for designers.

Mike Timonin @bookreadingguy.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I mean, there's a whole universe of military recreationism from the Romans to Vietnam, and those folks are super strict about accuracy. But it's not role playing, really.

Not, perhaps, quite what you had in mind, but there's a whole range of pedagogical RPGs called Reacting to the Past which are exactly that. Players (usually students!) take the roles of historical figures (or historically representative figures) and play out a historical moment. They're really neat!

Depends on the church. Lots of Protestant churches have the kids in for 20 minutes or so, with a little kid story at the front and then out to Sunday School. Sometimes, there's a special service where the kids don't go out.

I don't know that I qualify as a "gamer," in terms of video games I'm a filthy casual, but I cut class in high school to play Civilization on a friend's computer (more than once), and I've built more than one computer specifically for Civ games, so probably that.

Good morning #IthacaFarmersMarket! It's a cool morning with drizzle and rain forecast for the day; wet and gloomy, suiting the beginning of Fall. We're in booth 59, opposite the crepes and next to the hats. Crowds should be manageable today because of the weather, so do come see us!
