I know I am about as biased as possible on this but go to an indie bookstore. An indie bookstore's vibes are the opposite of...all of this. You'll be surrounded by memories, stories, brave visions of the future that don't ignore our barbarous present. Your brain can be quiet AND full. Seriously.

This is what supporting local authors looks like in our shop. Face out, front and center, best shelf in the place. Yes, you can get bestsellers and big names here, too. But our local friends don't compete for space. They own the space. #ShopLocal #SupportLocalAuthors

This is what independent bookstores are all about. A packed house of aspiring writers learning from local authors Rachel McRady and Kristin Kisska and local publisher Wildling Press. Spirited and supportive conversations about bringing important stories from real humans to life. #ShopLocal

We really, deeply appreciate that you let us do this work with you. Buy your shampoo and cordless drill from That Guy if you must. But maybe let book buying be a special thing you do in your community. We'd be honored to help you. #ShopLocal #SupportIndies

You know who does that. You know. It's Chris and Christy and David and Sara and Lilly and Alex (sorry for no picture, Alex!). And we really love doing it. Books are special to us. They aren't just the thing that comes down the conveyor belt after shampoo and a cordless drill.

That Guy doesn't support local authors. That Guy doesn't help your child find the book that makes them feel like a reader. That Guy doesn't greet you when you walk in the door and say, "We just got a book in that made me think of you!"

100

Book People RVA @bookpeoplerva.bsky.social · 25/06/2026

So, this week you can buy books from That Guy for a discount and they will come to your house very quickly. And, great. But That Guy doesn't listen to what you love and then help you find the perfect book. That Guy doesn't work with the local library to host fantastic events.

Go ahead and judge a book by its cover. This story is as hauntingly beautiful and layered as the artwork. At times deeply sad, it is a story of family, loss, and redemption. I loved it. #ShopLocal #IrishSad #OnShelvesNow @penguinrandomhouse.bsky.social
