This past week, Dr. Twu held a letterpress workshop with Dr. Jennifer Moore's JOUR 2501: American Media History class in UMD’s Book Lab. The students participated in the letterpress process, learning the fundamentals of typesetting and making their own prints with a hand-lever press.

Before speaking at UMD, Dr. Alex Korte stopped into one of Dr. Twu’s classes to talk about and show off some deer hides and their use in parchments! Additionally, Dr. Twu showed how to make quills ready for writing.

We are proud to announce that UMD’s own Dr. Krista Sue-Lo Twu (Associate Professor, English, Linguistics & Writing Studies), has been selected as the 2026 recipient of The Medieval Academy of America’s CARA award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Envelopes weren’t mass produced until the 1840s, so before that, a variety of letterlocks were used to keep the contents of a message private. The paper would be folded almost like origami, and once the seal and paper were opened, it would be impossible reseal the same way.

Flax, flax, flax! Last month was our flax day! Volunteers and members of the team were out in the autumn sun, working the flax from the retted fibers into the usable, soft fibers that will be critical in crafting the Book of The North.

October was an incredible month for the Book of The North! Our team and community harvested nettles and flax, learned to make ink out of all sorts of things, wrote beautiful scripts in medieval styles, but most importantly, came together as a community.

Earlier this month, some volunteers gathered to harvest oak galls for the Book of The North! Though the leaves here in northern Minnesota have changed and are falling, the day was green and beautiful. These galls will be used in some of the ink that will be in the book.

Walnuts and thorn berries will play a crucial roll in creating the ink for the Book of The North. Last Thursday, we sat down with Dr. Twu to see how it’s made, from the tree to the page. Dr. Twu also did some writing in Bâtarde, a font for use in the book, to test the ink to beautiful results.

After flax has been retted, it's put through a flax brake. This tool breaks away the outer and inner layers of the flax, freeing the fiber within. To learn more and contribute, join us next Wednesday, September 3rd, at the Landlab for a flax event!
