Happy Hobbit Day! May we be as wise as wizards, as glorious as dragons, and as fond of food and fun as a Fool of a Took. Also potatoes. There should be potatoes in there somewhere.

Friends, has anyone ever had library card fraud? Or clerical library error? Because there’s a book on my record from a day I went to the library that I definitely did not check out.

THIS IS YOUR MONDAY KYUNGSOO @mondaykyungsoo.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
HAPPY MONDAY EVERYBODY!! I’VE GOT A PREEETTY GOOD FEELING ABOUT THIS WEEK, DOES ANYONE ELSE? MANY THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO. HOW WAS THE WEEKEND? WAS IT A TRUE WEEKEND DURING WHICH THE WEEK ENDED? OR IS STILL GOING RIGHT NOW AND IT’S CONFUSING BECAUSE A NEW ONE IS BEGINNING?
A cartoony drawing of Kyungsoo: he’s sitting on top of a car with a bright red electric guitar in his hands. The sky is clear, there are mountains in the distance, and tall grass obscuring the bottom part of the car. Kyungsoo is grinning, wearing an off-white shirt over a yellow t-shirt.

bright pink orchids / zuigetsu ikeda / 1877 - 1944. Japan
Unfurling in vibrant, tropical splendor against a quiet slate-grey ground, these twin Cattleya orchids showcase the masterly botanical draftsmanship of Ikeda Zuigetsu (1877–1944). Rendered in delicate woodblock printing (mokuhan-ga), the composition centers on two full, undulating blooms suspended on a slender stalk. Soft pink sepals give way to dramatic, ruffled labellums (lips) dyed in deep, saturated crimson-magenta, their inner throats marked with intricate golden-yellow striations. Below, crisp emerald leaves and paper-dry pseudobulb sheaths anchor the living plant, their textures meticulously delineated by fine, sharp contours and delicate tonal washes (bokashi).

Ikeda Zuigetsu occupies a singular position in early 20th-century Japanese graphic art, celebrated for bridging classical kachō-ga (bird-and-flower art) with the exacting demands of modern botanical illustration (shasei). During the Taishō and early Shōwa eras, as exotic Western flora gained immense popularity among Japanese collectors and horticulturists, Zuigetsu produced comprehensive portfolio series dedicated to orchids (Ran). His technique relied on extraordinary woodblock precision, using multiple carved blocks to achieve seamless color gradients on the ruffled petals while preserving the flat, graphic elegance inherent to traditional Japanese print culture.

Please raise your chipped teacups, glass goblets, and disposable pudding cups. Seven years ago to the day, the bookmarkedone blog was born. It seems like it shouldn't be that long ago. I still remember the thrill of it, pale sunlight streaming through the windows that first summer as I sent my words into the world. It seems like half a lifetime.

Midnight. A pair of rabbits frolic in the soft, rain-soaked grass. Somewhere close the fox cries like an infant who wants to be held, but I am cannier than I was when I first moved to the garret and will not be tricked into a changeling that way.
