Many years ago, when I was in graduate student at Penn, the anthropologist Clifford Geertz invited me to come work with him as one-year fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. I was forced to decline, but I have always wondered what would have happened had I gone.

When I arrived at Penn for graduate study 50 years ago, I had no idea what I was getting into. No one in my family had ever gone to college, much less grad school. As Malcom X said, you could have hung a placard around my neck that said “hick” and it couldn’t have been any more obvious.

Sad to learn of the death of my friend Ruth Hsu, who taught literature at the University of Hawai’i-Mānoa. Ruth was a lively presence in a course I taught at UH in 2019, “How to Write History from Below.” She was smart, learned, funny, kind, and gracious. I shall miss her very much. RIP.

Thinking of my uncle, Ted Robertson (1942-1999), the coolest guy in the world, I thought as a kid. He rode big motorcycles, jumped out airplanes as a paratrooper, made money as a pool shark, and was a well-known Western artist, based in New Mexico. Here is a self-portrait from 1982.

Yesterday I had lunch with a former student of mine, Julius Page, who was a high-flying, All-Big East basketball player during Pitt’s glory years. He has now published a book *One Who Knows* about his own journey and works in education to help underprivileged, at-risk children. Very proud of him.

Publishing tip #6: Try to find an editor who actually edits, someone who will help you think hard, conceptually and structurally, about your project. Editing is increasingly a lost art as universities cut subsidies to their presses, but there are still great editors out there.

Publishing tip #5: Choose your editor carefully. I’ve worked with five excellent editors at three different presses (on eleven books) and I’ve learned a lot from each one. The choice of editor, even more than the press you pick, will be formative for your book and for you as a writer.

On this day in 1759, 267 years ago, the radical abolitionist Benjamin Lay passed away at age 77. A hundred years before William Lloyd Garrison, Lay called for the immediate and complete abolition of slavery worldwide, with no payments to enslavers. Let us remember him. Art by Marco Lorenzetti.

A joy of having written about the radical abolitionist Benjamin Lay is to see how others are inspired by his story. Here is a song with lyrics by composer Lowell LaTerza Booth, “The Exhortation of Benjamin Lay.” She kindly gave me a copy when I met her at the Abington Quaker Meeting in November.
