I restore eelgrass and oyster reef habitats while I hang out in the waters of the Virginia Coast Reserve on the Atlantic Coast of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I also try to balance this work while supporting our shellfish aquaculture industry.

Hi Bluesky! We’re Alex Wilke and Mario Balitbit from TNC’s Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve. Today we’re sharing what it takes to protect one of the most important migratory bird habitats in the Western Hemisphere and why these barrier islands matter for birds, people, and coastal ecosystems.

That’s a wrap from the VCR team! Every season, this work comes down to timing, teamwork, and persistence. Thanks for joining us in the field, and for following along as we continue restoring these meadows, one seed at a time. -VCR Team @bolusk.bsky.social nature.ly/4azKRQ0

Marine Habitat Restoration Virginia
From building oyster reefs to establishing the largest successful eelgrass restoration effort in the world, we're putting science to work in Virginia's coastal bays.

On the VCR team, some of the most useful tools are simple. A garden rake can pull samples to the boat on cold days. Shoots are sorted by hand. The real expertise is knowing what to look for, and when. Timing and experience are everything. 🪣 -VCR Team @bolusk.bsky.social

Still with the VCR team! These bays had no eelgrass for nearly 70 years. Now, nearly 12,000 acres are back. Every season depends on moments like this, watching, waiting, and acting fast. It’s how we keep rebuilding habitat and give bay scallops a real shot at returning. -VCR Team @bolusk.bsky.social

You’re still here with the VCR team! This is a moment we wait for all year. We’re pulling shoots, opening spathes, and scanning meadows for signs seeds are ready. Miss this window, too early or too late, and we lose the year. These calls shape what we can restore. -VCR Team @bolusk.bsky.social

Hi VCR team here! We are coming to you from one of Virginia’s coastal bays where one of the largest eelgrass restorations on Earth is unfolding. Our job right now? Getting the timing just right, because a few days can make or break a year’s effort. Check out some field footage! @bolusk.bsky.social

🎙️ Today we’re handing over the mic to the Virginia Coast Reserve (VCR) team. Go behind the scenes of the world’s most successful seagrass restoration and see how this work is creating a path for bay scallops to return to Virginia for the first time in nearly a century! @bolusk.bsky.social

The grass can be greener🌱 Healthy coastal ecosystems protect our shorelines, wildlife, and economy. These efforts, plus those of committed groups like the Nature Conservancy in Virginia show that we can create a greener future. 🌎

Happy Earth Day! Today my brother caught several of these Northern Stargazers in his crab pots in 40-60 feet of water in the lower Chesapeake near Cape Charles. I've seen a few around here in my lifetime, but never in crab pots.

I always get a little bit nervous when the Chincoteague ponies come close to check on us while we are checking on our oyster restoration projects. Still, what a unique day in the life for a marine scientist!

Working with the local community alongside a smart combination of both sanctuary and harvest areas for oysters has had impressive impacts cleaning up the Lynnhaven. Keep up the good work!

Why saving seagrass meadows could help save the world’s coastlines
Seagrass meadows might not catch the eye like coral reefs, but they play an important and often unsung role in coastal protection, particularly as climate change increasingly eats away at shorelines.…

We had uncommon freezes the past two winters here in Virginia. So far our Nature Conservancy scientists are seeing low mortality rates. Interestingly, the ice appears to have moved many clusters of oysters and dropped them on the bottom nearby. Ice can actually spread our reefs horizontally!

Last Chesapeake Bay sunset before daylight savings time kicks in. This early taste of spring has me excited for oyster and eelgrass field season.

When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
