new mayoral list just dropped 🗞️ @bokchoy-baobei.bsky.social
Rae Huang

photo of Rev. Rae wearing a white blouse with black slacks standing with her arms crossed in front of city hall

caption: Rae Huang is a newcomer to LA politics seeking to oust incumbent Mayor Karen Bass from the left with her populist policies. (Credit: Bryan Bernart)A democratic socialist, community organizer and minister, Rae Huang announced her candidacy for office with many of the same promises (like fast and free buses) that Zohran Mamdani used on the campaign trail to win New York City’s mayoral race.

As LA Public Press previously reported, Huang is best known in the non-profit realm for her statewide housing advocacy as the deputy director of Housing Now California. She has called publicly to abolish ICE and is pushing for greater reforms to law enforcement and transparency in the city budgeting process.

Despite a strong social media campaign collaborating with popular online political commentators like Hasan Piker, Huang still has a long way to go to become the household name she needs to be to beat Bass. She still has not secured key endorsements from prominent leftist political parties, including the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America or the Working Families Party.
