Well that’s the point. You were expected to use reference, and would get called out by the teachers if you handed in a project where you clearly didn’t use any because they literally gave you an entire room full of it. Not using it was seen as not making an effort.

When I went to the Kubert school, they drilled us not just on using reference, but also had a whole room full of file cabinets crammed with photos, old magazines and everything that you were expected to use, because nobody was expected to have all that junk in their head.

The problem with any technology is that it can and will be abused. And the newer it is, the less opportunity there has been to figure out how to deal with those abuses. It gets a bad rep when people mostly see it as a weapon used for that abuse by assholes with shitty reasons.
