...Featuring the following manuscripts - all of which you can explore on digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk - St John's College MS 61 - Bodleian Library MS. Douce 167 - Bodleian Library MS. Bodl. 764 - Bodleian Library MS. e Mus. 136
White text on a dark blue background: 'belief: the monoceros, a one-horned creature with the body of a horse and the feet of an elephant.

Medieval mistake. The creature may have originated in descriptions of the rhinoceros'

Underneath a gilded image of an animal from a manuscript, surrounded by latin text. The animal is white, four legged, like a stocky horse with a determined expression and a long, sharp, curved horn that points downwards. Text overlaid on a manuscript showing a comparatively accurate drawing of a brown coloured bear licking a formless blue lump. Text reads: 'Belief: bear cubs were born as shapeless lumps of flesh and fashioned into proper form by their mother licking them.

Medieval mistake. This idea appears repeatedly in bestiaries and derives from Classical sources such as Pliny. To 'lick something/someone into shape' is still a common expression today! An illustration throwing three figures and a unicorn - drawn with a curly tail as well as an extremely long red horn. A young man holds the unicorn's back legs, an older man places a rein around its neck, and a seated women lets the unicorn rest it's head upon her lap. The unicorn has closed eyes and seems relaxed. Text reads: 'Belief. A unicorn could be captured by placing a maiden in its path. It would lay its head in her lap, allowing hunters to capture it.

Medieval mistake & allegory. In the bestiary, the unicorn represented Christ and its encounter with the maiden was given a Christian interpretation. 'A richly coloured and illuminated panel from a medieval manuscript showing an action packed scene - three hunters, armed and with hunting dogs stand to the left of the frame whilst on the right two beavers try to make their escape. One of the beavers is wearing a pained expression and the hunter closest to him clutches a pair of testicles in his raised arm. The beaver below is in the process of biting off his testicles.

Text reads: 'Belief: when pursued by hunters seeking its testicles, a beaver would bite them off itself and throw them away.

Medieval mistake. But beavers were hunted for castoreum, a substance produced in glands near the tail, valued for medicinal purposes'.
