Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The T of the South Pennines where the people stop the sheep begin. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 30/09/2026It's a really weird place to be a "green belt nimby". 110
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Urbed proposed breaking/downgrading the ring road between Wakefield road and Chapel hill to become normal streets to achieve a better transition. The traffic levels through Huddersfield since the M62 opened gave never really justified urban motorways. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Hoping people dress up nice and take the opportunity to pretend to be Nicholas Cage and/or Cher in Moonstruck. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Actually had time to pop in to the new library today. Still think it's all really well put together. 020
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I lost interest in my own family tree when the branches revealed most of them had just been hanging around a few patches of the south pennines for hundreds of years (surnames heatmap shown). Even with this parochialism I presumably wouldn't qualify due to some irishness. 000
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Obviously it's easier to say this on a lovely autumn day but this is a really pleasant well designed space. Plenty of people hanging around generally mooching already. 150
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I always mince pork shoulder for pork pies (supermarket pies are terrible, Melton Mowbray ones are a crime). You need a bit of control over the cuts and type of fat used. The mincer attachement for my kitchenaid works fine but I am always tempted by a trespade when it's stand pie time at Christmas. 250
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 21/09/2026The cost of not seeing urban consolidation. The dot map shows total population and overall density in North Kirklees (Dewsbury) should mean a sixth large West Yorkshire town, but the failure to consolidate and focus services on one town centre can be seen in the weak decentred bus network. 050
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Here is a photo of my daughter when she was two where I always imagine she was trying to do an impression of Wilson looking thoughtful and wise with his pipe and face paint cat's whiskers. 000
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Just remembered that this photo of Harold Wilson hoofing a retriever in the head exists. 011
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Either these dicks don't know what a principality is or this is the real reason Harry and Meghan are back. 030
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I commute by bike but don't ride on pavements (except occasionally within the guidance set out by Paul Boateng when it became an offence) and obey traffic law so I don't have responsibility for or solidarity with people who don't. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Totta's border valley (like Marsden to the south) but assume James means this. 160
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Can only assume the leader of my local council thought insane, AI generated, union flag/mad spider/synthetic rug backdrop was a winner. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 31/08/2026What's that apostrophe doing? Do they think towns need a definite article or that they are going to a place called Thuddersfield? 110
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Grateful to @jacktindale.bsky.social for inadvertently reminding me to do this. 191
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 24/08/2026Like most NORMAL people I just say The Colne Valley Cloth District and assume that everyone knows I mean the whole country. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 23/08/2026I don't really have an opinion on heritage railways running commuter services but I do have strong opinions on a valley/borough being described as a town and 70k people living in fairly dense post industrial communities along said valley bottom being described as rural. www.ft.com/content/6fc8... 130
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Also the commute from New York would be a bastard. Best to hire Dockers or Stevedores. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 17/08/2026Re wildfires, Moors for the Future have produced an interesting report on the changes in moorland fire locations TLDR they used to be remote high moorland, now they are easy access sites close to roads. www.moorsforthefuture.org.uk/__data/asset... 000
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 17/08/2026Perfect 10/10 no notes. I mean, can Vatican city, for example be an important cultural site with such a low acreage? 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 16/08/2026Of course, Park hill actually survives entire. The Hyde Park flats which were the second part of the scheme were demolished. 120
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 15/08/2026I think we'd have a better public understanding of urban development if urbanists spent less time playing Catan and more time reading about early modern land tenure and inheritance practices in marginal upland agricultural communities. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Apparently now named Queensgate Square. As well as looking great it also fulfills the important role of all public realm improvements in allowing shits on Facebook to complain that they aren't allowed to park on it, it isn't Woolworths in 1992 and fails to meet their Meadowhall Ethnostate™ needs. 130
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 02/08/2026Not sure why they would propose this as a benefit. People still use and live along the roads that connect to the A628. Sometimes people want to go to Glossop, or Holmfirth, or get to Sheffield or Manchester from places that aren't Sheffield or Manchester. 100
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 31/07/2026This is turning out to be a really nice bit of public realm. Can't wait for it to be opened up to the people. 020
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 31/07/2026For those who celebrate, get yourself to The County tomorrow. 000
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 31/07/2026www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... I mean you could argue that Ben Houchen has already used his mayoral powers very effectively, if accidentally, to put money, in the form of assets, in some people's pockets. 020
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 27/07/2026The other week there was a thing about the cultural reference you make at work that nobody gets and it's actually this. 020
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 27/07/2026Enjoyed this from @stephenkb.bsky.social but this did leave me wondering if HE is the neglected relation, what is FE? The friend your parents met on holiday who inexplicably sends your child a birthday card. www.ft.com/content/7007... via @FT 1273
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 26/07/2026 www.bbc.com/news/article... Ah. The Leeds-Bradford-Hudds stopper. Truly the most frustrating service. 100
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 26/07/2026When you have a 2ft wide pavement, no constriction to the road, and every other car parked properly you're just advertising that you're a worthless arsehole by doing this. 150
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Central Leeds is pretty much at the halfway point between coasts. Most of West Yorkshire is actually in North West England. 210
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 24/07/2026I think anyone who heads up a think tank/pressure group should be obliged to change their name to that group. Zoe Ippr-North Joe Fabian etc. 010
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Of course blowing up the Peak has a long noble history, hence the weird inset down to Buxton to avoid the stupid national park interfering with the quarries. 040
Bob Melling @bobmelling.bsky.social · 23/07/2026I really wish that these details could be included in all reports of this kind. The problem isn't lithium batteries or Ebikes it's a UK state that allows irresponsible sellers to supply dangerous goods to service a delivery app economy that wouldn't be viable without the use of illegal motorbikes. 271
