This Cartoon by @davidsquires.bsky.social is *over 12 years old.* In unrelated news, new Portugal coach Jorge Jesus speaks: "I haven't spoken with [Ronaldo] yet. [He] is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me."

BBC's HT stats for the Women's Champions League final are... well they're something alright.

No desire to rub it in, but in all likelihood the bottom of the barrel is hundreds of kilometres below the current point. My bet is that Pete Hegseth ends up having a cage match with whoever ends up replacing Patel. Or that one member of cabinet ends up accidentally shooting another.

Maybe not *everyone*, but outside of Linkedin Wankers the amount of hate coming from all corners for AI generally, and the data, energy, and climate implications of it specifically, gives me tremendous hope.

Why are you giving gifts to Britain's enemies James?

One of these stories is not like the other two...
NYT homepage on February 19th, 2006, showing stories of the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor on suspicion of misconduct in public office, the sentencing of Yoon Suk Yeol to life imprisonment after being found guilty of leading an insurrection in South Korea, and the US military build-up around Iran.

Some of the quotes on this are exactly as expected. Two thoughts: 1) As a general rule, do not punish the behaviour you wish to see (see below). 2) In *this* scenario, if you want ideological purity/the chance to liquidate rival factions, it's advisable to do this after the principal foe is defeated
Image of a social media post by 'olofahere' entitled "Do not punish the behaviour you want to see". Text states:
"I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?

But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize, snarkily say, "So, you've decided to join us"?

Or when someone does something they've had trouble doing, say, "Why can't you do that all the time?" (Happened to me, too often.)

Or any sentence containing the word "finally".

If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Don't complain about how it's not enough. Don't bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.

Because I swear to fucking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.

Boy embodies spirit of his country's president when killing his own father.
When asked what he believed would happen when he fired the gun, the boy responded that he was "mad" and that he had "not thought about that", according to investigators.

"as he continues to falsely claim otherwise". I'm not sure exactly what else you want them to say here.

We're 5-8 years and *tens of billions of dollars* into the current "AI era". I googled this because the phrase "yer gettin' battered" was stuck in my head and I wanted to re-watch that video. A simple search, yet the AI Overview somehow got almost every aspect of this wrong. It's staggeringly shit.

Yeah, I think Wirecutter product testers should be doing political reporting too. FWIW, the top story on the NYT homepage is about how the latest jobs figures show Trump is living in an alternate reality.

All of this MJ article on Epstein's black book is great, but this line especially has been seared into my head since I read it. You see it *everywhere*, notably the stupid AI boom with journalists writing fan fiction on stuff AI will do because number must go up. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

It bears repeating - if AI is so good, why are the ads around AI for things no-one could possibly care about. You can make your own Emojis. Wow. LIFE-ALTERING. The only ones worse than this are the diary planners whose first step is 'do a mountain of data entry'.

Back to EH Carr, and a later part of that quote on writing. AI devices are output machines (less charitably, Bullshit Machines, per Hicks, Humphries, Slater from the University of Glasgow). Input = output, ideally *exactly* what the input requested. But this isn't smart thinking, as Carr explains.

#BobetoRantsAboutAI, part 2 in an occasional series. I'm a devotee of EH Carr, and 'What is History' was for a long time my personal bible. I still remember the first time, in my late teens, I read this passage about what for Carr was the reciprocal relationship between reading and writing:

One of his kids came out as trans. His factories had to close during covid. So he torched his entire brand. Good job big fella.

@montereyaq.bsky.social hello! Can you re-post this on this site? It's one of my all time favourite tweets and now that I'm binning twitter I'd like to have it here to occasionally stare/chuckle at (will come see if should I ever find myself in CA, essentially on the strength of this tweet alone)
