We need to rethink the fiscal rules. Not so we can borrow more but so we can spend better. I wrote an essay for the New Economics Foundation that outlines the three changes we need to make to get our economy working for the long term.

Burnham is getting the red-carpet treatment today. But it will be months before he faces proper scrutiny in Parliament. It's an insult to the public.

The Government has no plan to find the extra £40 billion we need for defence — and they don't seem to be working on one. We need a serious cross-party approach to solving this problem. youtube.com/shorts/MbVLC...

40% of local people say they can't get an NHS dentist. This crisis has been building for years. Yet the Government is only now starting to consult on a solution. That's not good enough.

My wife and I received amazing care at the St Helier Maternity department during the birth of our daughter recently. It's heartbreaking that crumbling buildings are letting down the hardworking staff. We must get the upgrade staff and patients deserve.

The review into the maternity care crisis makes for harrowing reading. Years of under investment has left the maternity department in St Helier with unsafe pipework and there are threats that it may have to close. The government must bring forward its delayed plan for a new maternity building now.👇

The next PM must focus relentlessly on the economy: 🏗️Go big on capital investment into homes, energy and transport. 💷Take on radical tax reform to incentivise job creation and growth. 🇪🇺Be brave enough to fix our relationship with the EU. The bolder the better.

The Government’s rejection of Thames Water’s rescue deal doesn’t go far enough. They should put them into administration and change the ownership. End privatisation and put the customers in charge.

Great news today as we have secured funding for an extension of St Helier's A & E. The project will cost nearly £60 million and will go a long way to ending corridor care. I am going to keep the pressure on to make sure that we see spades in the ground as quickly as possible.

It’s no good coming up with clever schemes to improve CVs or hand out bungs to businesses to create short term placements. The state’s role should not be so reactive. It should be creating the conditions required for a flourishing jobs market - shaping it, not correcting it.

2/2 The Jobcentre should be a place people can turn to at any stage of their career – to get advice, retrain, and find new opportunities before they reach crisis point, not after.

When it comes to career support, the Jobcentre often feels like a last resort. Take my dad, for example. After years as a scaffolder, he couldn’t keep going and had to change careers in his 50s. But there wasn’t any real support until he was out of work and on benefits. That isn’t good enough 1/2

Lenders have said in the past this redress scheme could threaten their industry and even the wider economy. But throughout this process the motor finance industry has remained strong. Now is the time to accept responsibility and pay consumers what they are owed. 5/5
