Just heard of Wendell Berry’s passing. Incredible writer and essayist. The opening essay in this collection ‘A Native Hill’ from 1968 is one of the best pieces of writing about landscape and what it means to belong and connect with a place that you’ll ever read. #booksky #nature #landscape #farming

Most lowland woods in England are criss-crossed with drainage ditches, dug to help intensive forestry exploitation. Most woods no longer managed, but drainage still maintained for convenience of dogwalkers etc., losing ponds, bogs. Re-wetting woodland to buffer against droughts should be a priority.

Flying back into the UK yesterday it was very clear that England isn’t such a green and pleasant land anymore. Everything was parched, yellows and browns across the fields rather than greens. Lakes and reservoirs low. When will politicians wake up to the scale of this? #climatecrisis

This from 2007 BBC documentary 'Climate Change: Britain Under Threat', the late Jay Wynne predicting >30C daily for half of August 2050. With 24 years still to go, we'll already have two heatwaves far exceeding 30C in the past month - not in August high summer, but spring/early summer. Terrifying.

Nearly 1 in 6 UK species are threatened with extinction. We've lost 97% of our wildflower meadows since the 1930s. We have 73 million fewer birds than in the 1970s - a decline of almost a third. And yet some politicians still just see wildlife as a blocker to progress.
