Windows Server SMB and clients now support compression, but it's barely begun development for clients on other platforms

I'm usually wrestling around terabytes worth of stuff at a time on Linux servers so I can't speak to every situation, but usually for an initial transfer or one-off I will compress and unpack that stuff, and for incremental I'll use rsync daemon over ssh, which offers compression

apropos of nothing, there are a LOT of perhaps well-meaning people who have no idea what the word "accountability" means. usually the concept they're reaching for is capital punishment. i get it because crime pays shockingly well right now, but without intellectually honest lexicon we are so fucked.

Are you talking about handling millions of small files? Samba 4.x performs excellently for me outside of these situations, and usually there I'm using rsync over ssh to the daemon instead, and/or NFS where appropriate

These neo-Nazi fuckers have been driving a ladder around town putting up heavy coroplast signs stapled so hard they won't budge if you can even reach them. This is after ICE stole somebody from the courthouse down the street last week. I appreciate the police keep taking them down for us but damn.

no, she’s the wolf from a 4th or 5th century mosaic depicting the founding of Rome
The she-wolf who nurtured Romulus and Remus, depicted in mosaic form as a maniacal black dog with sharp teeth and white eyes.
My dog, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the maniacal mosaic wolf.

Maybe this line of thought is insufferable & mediocre to you in the face of dire threats. I get it! Isn't that very fucking thing a metastasized problem in our communication systems that supresses that struggle? Do you feel empowered on the grand scale from your designated silo, social or systemic?

You know what? Let's f4f on LinkedIn... the only remaining pure social network. Materialism, baby. Money -> mouth. If we want to go pancakes and waffles, I'm definitely telling people not to wear their pieces of flair in public. I only want professional associations! I hate preflighting this shit.

If you disagree, don't like it, or can't imagine what's valuable in it between the lines, you know… engage with it or don't! Block me without a word! Who cares any more? People aren't worth challenging. And when they are, it's because they're either very stupid (Recoverable?) or ontologically evil.

As a result, the broad effects variously chill or embolden, galvanize and alienate, nurture and abandon people in precisely the ways that unwind any social progress hard-won by people making more deliberate and critical use of the medium available. Those experiences fade from living, working memory.

In all spheres, political, identity, intimate, difficult, challenging, or otherwise, we continue to be collapsed into one form that doesn't account for the ways that people naturally present and behave in person, to put their best foot forward for building the solidarity that *serves* diversity.

This put your entire skin in the game for theirs -- they can't expect to censor you without losing the value you represent. Despite how ineffectual we are individually, enough people made this deal that some platforms are responsive to it; despite complaints, bsky for example can be disciplined.

As we're reduced to quantifiable, modelable, controllable single rows of data managed by our captors, and they profit best from a flattening of interpersonal connections, we said, "Bet. Take me or fucking leave me, all of me, for your money." -- which necessarily imposed the same on our sociality.

For those few out there who remember Circles (Have you stretched today?), I'm not saying it was implemented to the complete satisfaction of what we need right now and going forward. But it was a promising seed sown to infertile ground whose genome seems lost today. And its absence informs a problem.

Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
There are all sorts of reasons this became a point of design inertia maintained by even freer platforms including Bluesky and Mastodon. Sure, Facebook allows you to limit post visibility to friends… Mastodon can limit to the instance… Blacksky can limit to Blacksky… Nothing does what Circles did.

They gamified and refined the loop for the systems now carrying the overwhelming bulk of public human communication, and weaponized identity politics to set the stage like a dungeon master. Prosocial implements like Circles weren't just irrelevant at this point; they would undermine the conflict.

Because their profit model required maximum engagement and retention to keep your eyeballs trained on the space their ads will occupy, they went much farther than messing with offsite linking and putting UX through a wind tunnel. They tuned algorithms and interfaces for maximum social friction.

As monetization inevitably grew more intense and invasive among the winning platforms, they put up new hurdles not only to sharing socially disenfranchised content, but to establish your identity uniquely as a condition of holding an account, including mandatory connection to a mobile phone number.

Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
In the context of an understandable resistance to Google expanding outside of search, and doing an Internet Explorer-style forced integration, and Circles failing to gain traction as a social need in the existing milieu, Plus died hard, in just a few years, particularly short-lived even for them.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
In early days, both the management of multiple accounts improved and a promising concept arose to integrate this basic need. Google+ notably introduced the concept of Circles. With it you could maintain one account that allowed you to control which social spheres a given post was published to.

Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The rise of social media promised an open forum founded on the largely uncriticized goodwill of an initially benignly-monetized provider, and its boundaries were intuitive; separate accounts were cumbersome but doable when you had fundamentally different connections to make with different people.

Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
There is a lineage to recount here that isn't easily fit into a microblog thread, but the short story is that one day long ago people had to make conscious communication decisions to accomplish anything on the Internet, and made [im]prudent decisions based on expectable reach and trust in providers.

I've been thinking about why kink community is shooting itself in the foot by overcorrecting for its marginalization and misrepresentation by making it a completely inseparable part of every community member's outward persona -- a frankly antisocial practice that loses ground -- it's *platforms*.

It would be one thing if this misbehavior simply earned you nullroutes and filtering and new hurdles for humans to clear, but the purveyors are increasingly capable of circumventing all available mitigations. What do you do with this? Call AI stupid and "ban" it? Does that help?

It doesn't help that the initial userbase to whom they have no choice but to pitch this primarily toward is, as a mass, divergently insufferable and holds these architects in several different types of contempt at once. Only once bitten, or sharing a material context, does anyone take it seriously.

Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's striking how close ATP comes to providing this, and it's innovating some things whose ambitions are long-coveted by my project, including expendable 'nice-to-haves' with immense promise like distributed delegated authentication, but it doesn't look like it's going to land on-target.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And the appearance of AT Protocol's offering as a vast landscape of Products with business models intuitively repels the exhausted worker living in perpetual exodus world, while an accessible option that doesn't require self-hosting to assemble a well-mitigated network of trust relationships won't.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's esoteric and unapproachable in its vastness and ambition, and accessible navigation of its fundamental requirements to self-host is clearly far from top priority, while solving the identity problem alone is a difficult elevator pitch to write but will be trivially intuitive once it exists.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
As far as I can tell, AT Protocol does not do this. It is too distracted trying to solve all the mass of problems at once they've been dazzled by in social media that it doesn't have the conviction to unburden the identity layer of as much accessory functionality as possible and mitigate its abuse.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I don't claim to have all the answers, but I see enough of the big picture of problems I know we have to detach the identity layer with near-absolute isolation so people can make their own decisions on how to use personal ans group connections to then communicate and organize.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Discord wishes it was social media and is twisting itself into knots about how to manage and exploit its consequently relatively free masses. Free platforms and protocols can't figure out how to grow and sustain themselves and interconnect without replicating the seeds of alienation in rich soil.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This is to say nothing here in particular about AT Protocol; maybe it'll give rise to something that transcends! I'm not yet convinced. Communication is not all social media, much as the owners of its substrata converge upon its institution, and the least we can do is connect people to maintain it.
100
Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
In a lineage that contrasts the still-persisting and strongly-cast pathological mold of Facebook, where nothing you say of import actually reaches anyone who follows or friends you, and countless options that exchange the roles of who decides how you connect with other people, feels pretty hopeless!

It's sincerely difficult to decide which version of hell grates more on the nerves. For all the respecting my intelligence & my time that this website pursues in contrast to the lowbrow systemized shitstirring of the other, the trade for its own fully naked sense of social superiority is nauseating.

Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
X and Bluesky are a pair forged in hell to dazzle the good-faith pursuit of any consensus reality, presenting a false dichotomy where the former once built an elaborate system of algorithmic siloing to reduce exposure only to do an about-face, and the latter preferred to foster it socially instead.

Bobby Brown @bobbyd0g.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The piles of confidently, finger-pointingly, derangedly out-of-touch, obscenely wrong shit people will fellate each other with on this platform, knowing the stuffy culture here can bandwagon it with zero pushback because on some level we all know it's not worth it, is such a sick state of existence.

The depth of depravity required to defend the state of Israel in late 2026, with so much bared to public record, is intolerable to see from people you once thought humane and rational, now misappropriating select nuances of a long history into the service of miserable, ultimately fascistic conceits.
