Technically I am from California, but I moved when I was two and my formative years were all east of the Mississippi. I don’t know what to think about this.
A map of the United States with different colors representing how I scored on a 125 question test about how I say certain words and what I call certain things. California and Oregon are darkest red (most similar), the Deep South and New England darkest blue (least similar). I mostly grew up in a yellow
section (in the middle).

Why do people follow me? I don’t post very often I lurk. A lot. I block most who ask to follow me because I can’t see a good reason why they would. And I rarely follow someone back. I’m boring.

Something beautiful for the weekend! An extraordinary Acheulean handaxe knapped around a fossil shell c. 500,000-300,000 years ago! From West Tofts, Norfolk 📷 MAA Cambridge University collections.maa.cam.ac.uk/objects/4509... #Archaeology
The photo shows a Lower Paleolithic Acheulean biface handaxe knapped from dark grey flint with a creamy-white cortical layer, shown against a black background. The handaxe is roughly tear-drop shaped with a pointed tip and rounded bottom. There is a fossil shell centrally displayed on one face, identified as the Cretaceous bivalve mollusc Spondylus spinosus. Above the shell to the right is a small rectangular museum label. Likely made by an early neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) population or an alternative Middle Pleistocene hominin species (H. heidelbergensis s.l.). The toolmaker has knapped the flint in such a way as to seemingly retain the shell in a central position. The shell’s central display has often been described as an example of aesthetic intention by the toolmaker. A recent study (“The West Tofts handaxe: A remarkably average, structurally flawed, utilitarian biface” by Emily Flanders and Alastair Key) concluded it was likely ‘an average utilitarian tool’ in the eyes of its Acheulean maker, and that the aesthetic intent is assumed by the present-day beholder, and not supported by objective evidence.

Measurements 79mm x 35mm x 132mm. Weight 0.375kg.

Collections of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge.

“Jack-booted government thugs" … "Masked, massively armed mobs of screaming, swearing agents invading the homes of innocents.” A description of the current Homeland Security reign of terror? Nope. This was the National Rifle Association's rhetoric in 1995. 1/5🧵
A National Rifle Association official calls federal agents "black-suited, masked, massively armed mobs of screaming, swearing agents invading the homes of innocents." If that's not descriptive enough, how about a fund-raising letter referring to them as "jack-booted government thugs."

What’s up? The aurora is up! I took a few pics from central Missouri
A series of cell phone photographs taken the night of November 11th, 2025 showing a red sky, some with a green horizon, all from the aurora borealis, caused by particles shot out from the sun that hit our atmosphere and ionize gases. These photos are from central Missouri, which is pretty far south, so red is the predominant color, seen only in strong storms. The red glow of the aurora borealis through trees that have mostly lost their leaves.

The Mystery of the Missing Suet. The new block of suet is gone, yet the feeder is secure. Who could do such a thing and how? (No doubt the Raccoon, last night with the nimble fingers)
A green wire mesh cage bolted into a tree. The cage is closed, yet the former contents, a block of suet, is gone. It’s a mystery!

Too much doom scrolling today. Ugh. In contrast, I looked for and found some LeConte’s Sparrows this morning in Missouri. (Probably) a Life Bird, I bought a pie to celebrate.
A LeConte’s Sparrow on dry weeds in a Missouri prairie. More colorful than many sparrows, the face is mostly amber. there are brown streaks across the chest and along the flanks.
I “identified” one in Minnesota over 40 years ago, but I’m not certain I was correct (I used the Chandler Robbins field guide at the time). It might as well be a “Life Bird” (one I’ve never seen before), and I bought a pie to celebrate.

Eating some #LiferPie today after finding a Connecticut Warbler in Illinois! I noticed quite a few sightings in the last two weeks so I knew it was possible, but not very likely. I got great views of a bird that is usually very hard to see well. No camera, so I just watched as long as it let me.
A banana cream pie that I bought to celebrate seeing a bird for the first time-a Connecticut Warbler. This was a “Life Bird” for me, so I got to eat some “Lifer Pie”A map of northeast Illinois (the Chicago metropolitan area) with red dots representing sightings of Connecticut Warblers over the last two weeks. There are so many red dots I thought I might get lucky enough to see one for the first time (and I did!!)

A problematical checklist I may not submit to eBird. The curlew was heard only and not recorded. I’m sure it won’t be confirmed by the reviewer, but I’m also sure of what I heard (which would be quite rare)
An eBird checklist from 6:16am August 22nd from my porch. 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, 1 Long-billed Curlew (rare!), 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee, 1 American Goldfinch, 3 Northern Cardinals.
The curlew was heard only and is quite rare in Missouri. The local eBird reviewer has balked at approving heard-only birds *with* recordings, and I didn’t get a recording of the curlew.
