Introducing the AOL members 90s web site archive: aol.restorativland.org The IA backup of AOL members sites was.. not as robust as the Geocities one, but there's still plenty of good stuff here. As far as I know this is the first browsable AOL Members Archive ever. Completely unexplored territory.

Here are some flowers for the @aster.id crew, who managed to announce their launch exactly when asters hit peak purple in north america. (They're smart like that.)

"most people still prefer that to public-like-Twitter": absolutely! and not trying to convince them to change their mind

(Facebook non-publicness probably does help with stalking and intra-family privacy)

I think that fully public means you can not exclude even your worst enemy from reading what you wrote, plus sketchy stranger entities you've never heard of. In some ways I think Facebook is the worst of both worlds: sketchy strangers and cops can read, but public interest orgs can't.

Hi protocol friends! I've been cooking up a Very Large PDS (vlpds) implementation capable of scaling up to billions of accounts and down to just one. It uses Object Storage as its only state, supports HA operation, live scaling up and down, is feature-complete with the reference PDS, and is FOSS.

Overview · vlpds docs
An atproto PDS whose only durable storage is an object store. Any node serves any request, one node can run a personal server for free, and a few nodes can carry all of Bluesky's write load.

damn! glad you walked away. highly recommend Tagaderm (or equivalent) for road rash type injuries. "breathes", semi-waterproof, less puss, etc. sometimes you can get it cheaper online from canada. The Ladies holding it all together yet again

oh and public-to-private flows, like what @germnetwork.com is doing. I originally thought this was trivial but it sort of isn't.

the most interesting (and under-explored) design spaces to me right now are: "structured" public conversation (meaning scope/locality but still public) flexible spectrum of visibility but usable. Livejournal was the best at this IMO

group chats and community chats have nearly complete market penetration. they are arguably the dominant mode of this era, far from ignored or neglected.

I do think that some folks (myself included) can have blindspots around how important friction is even in public. and how important it can be to integrate of big-P Public and little-p public and non-public modes all in to one experience

even if one-in-a-thousand humans in the world really participate in The Public Conversation, it is really important for that happens openly and not be captured.

bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 04/10/2026
(replies disabled) even if you conclude that private conversation is more important than public conversation, you can conclude that public conversation is relatively under-resourced / under-developed. almost all tech interest for a decade+ has been public broadcast (not convo) or private convo

I think this is a pretty meh take. musk has been involved with some impressive and successful projects, but also a huge wake of failed projects and hyped bullshit. compared to tech barons like jobs, gates, bezos, butterfield, etc, who maintained a degree of credibility.

it would be great to have a website documenting the standard as an output of the WG. I like the way standard.site does it. I started a thread to discuss building one

Something I mentioned very briefly at the end of the WG meeting earlier this week was the idea of having a website at the base domain of whatever lexicon NSID we come up with. Eg, https://opensocial.g...

two follow-up threads from the Atmospheric Groups working group this past week... what NSID should be used for the lexicons? I'm personally leaning 'opensocial.group' these days. what do you think?

As an update, the tangled repo and current version of the proposal use opensocial.group. I’m now leaning towards that name personally. It is a bit friendlier, retains more of the history of this WG a...

some of those prefs could in theory be generic, like language and localization
120
bryan newbold @bnewbold.net · 02/10/2026
I think @alex.mcroberts.me is thinking of preferences, which are something that (personal) spaces are designed to work for. eg, right now the reference PDS has special bsky-specific logic for handling preferences, and it would be great to use spaces for that instead

(not trying to dunk or pile on, I think labor and toil reduction is usually a good thing in the big picture, just have a brain itch about the broad statement)

Is that actually true? Like, what is the more specific claim/observation about labor markets? Has anything ever reduced long-term employment? it's always felt like saying "eh, these things tend to sort themselves out".
