Someone told me it's like Embassytown so I read Embassytown and yes it is. You have a language where if you hear it in the wrong way from the wrong source it messes up your brain and now you just want to hear more of that. I have hopes that this nonsense will pass.

Maybe some more time in the old brain gym could have helped the little fella find the right words.

But it is true, each doubt needs to be tested against the "reasonable" test and there should be no reasonable doubts remaining. This is not the same as saying "I will accept X% of people being wrongly convicted". Any data scientist should be familiar with the limits of what data can tell you.

Website traffic to business websites drop by 70% and you think no-one will be able to prove damages from that? You're unnecessarily trivialising it. In any case it'll be argued in court not on bluesky. The fact that you can get a copy just proves that it is a form of copying.

Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
That'll be a fun one to try in court, your honour someone else had already done it, so I think it's ok if I did it too. These cases will rattle through courts and computer brain people won't decide it.

I spent nearly a whole day making dresses in a video game and reading wholesome character dialogue and I enjoyed it and regret nothing.

Also worth mentioning that earlier language models could not reproduce the original works and the new ones definitely can. That's copyright infringement any way you cut it. You seem to be saying the equivalent of "but someone burgled your house last week and you didn't complain"

I don't think you can say it was generally accepted since most people who were having their work scraped would have been entirely unaware of it or what it was being used for. I would characterise that as "getting away with it" not "generally accepted".

You know most bathrooms are only being used less than 5% of the time, we should probably have at most one bathroom per street and a schedule, why would anyone need their own. Of course the sewer is the actual collective solution, just like the bike lane is.

Well I guess since I can't win an arm wrestle with a factory robot I shouldn't waste time moving any major muscle groups. I'm going to train for a marathon by driving around the block a lot of times now.

Do I read that as "yield to peds" or "peds to yield"? Could have just been a normal sign rather than something highway style that could be interpreted two ways.

The most frequent reason a product manager will tell a stakeholder why their thing won't happen is they'll say the development will cost too much or take too long. I don't think I've ever seen one say it's a bad idea or doesn't align to strategy.

Well yes, but you're also in a competitive landscape and customers will also go elsewhere if you can't do what they want. There's a balance but certainly just maximising the pace of change isn't the best idea. OTOH software teams are often measured on how fast they can make change.

Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I said to a colleague, say I can change the software our business depends on at any speed - should I change it much faster than the business and our customers can understand what is changing, or a bit slower than that? Change doesn't slow down because we are bad typists.

One of my friends showed me it syncing files and charging at the same time over the FireWire 400 connection. That was at the time impossible on other devices. Copying files was slow and batteries needed a separate charger. It's wild how exciting it was, where now the same company is exhausting.

I made an agent (chatbots with tools in a loop) program to solve a problem, and I feel a bit like these things solve complex work in the same way that SQL solved databases. After all, data is easy with a DBMS right team? No need for specialised experts in data structures since the 80s!

By outsourced I meant offshored. Productivity seems to be one of those things where you can just say the thing you want and *somehow* that will lift productivity because no-one else knows any better. Giving me free money would boost productivity as I'll give more businesses revenue!

Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
How is fiddling with tax going to change revenue per employee? I wonder how shit it would look if they counted outsourced work.

I saw an iPod in the wild before I saw an ad and wanted it immediately. It was so straightforward and so good compared to anything else at the time. And yes other tech companies flailing at "people do thing they enjoy if they're enjoyable". The people do not clamour for wireless networks.

Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Of course, but it might be trivial. Adding a menu for a staff member who's already paid to work with a complex UI is hardly a big deal if it will save them time. If you don't think things should be added to or improved, what are we doing here?
000
Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Usually things that would be very beneficial for users can be knocked back by saying, "oh, it's only admin time, it's too expensive to build" Adding something to the surface of a system often can be done without adding complexity at all. Define "necessary"? Things should be made better.

We have found multiple times that people only have so much money and attention for games. Its a lot but it's not limitless. It is not an infinite growing market, no matter how flash the graphics get.

Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I've definitely pushed some things that wouldn't have otherwise happened, because I can argue, well the code is already done, why shouldn't we? I did that before AI as well but now it's an easier sell.

Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I find them extremely useful, not for what a conventional code review does, but for applying an attention to the full change that a human will struggle to do. Picking up things like out by one bugs, missed tests, typos, get before set etc.

The lesson of zombie movies is usually that it's the selfish people who represent the real danger. People who want to tell you they'd survive would be the raiders who let the zombies in when they try to steal your food.

Our brains definitely do something different and it's not in question. We do not get trained by pushing massive amounts of data through until we can make predictions. We do not run on large scale matrix multiplication. A baby learns to speak with a tiny amount of data.

Yellow Guy “No”
Red Guy “USE ME”

Donald Knuth had a fair bit to say on the document being more important than the code. Literate programming never really took off as a concept but I do think good software tells a story about how it works. Its value is in how it can be used and understood.

Paywalls fail only when there's another path. To me it looks like there'll be no way to run an informational website where the content is public. LLM scrapers will kill you. It used to be google would crawl about 5 pages to deliver a visitor. Anthropic crawls 38,000/visit generated.

How long will you sit a ticket in your dev queue for while still considering it valid, without speaking to a user again? Semantics indeed - the meaning of words, yes, that is an important thing in our profession. Putting work that you don't plan to do in front of devs is a mistake.

Ben L @bnej80.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
If the user who had the question is in a different role now because it's 4 years later, are you going to blindly do what they said 4 years ago because it's in the list? You need to prioritise work separately from a Dev queue. If it's not a priority, let the user know then and there.

Definitely not just game development! Everyone takes for granted that software will work well, irrespective of what it does, and that's an inordinately complex task.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a man is standing in front of an older gentleman walking his dog in the park. The man, making a friendly gesture towards the little white dog, asks, “does he bite?” The older man replies, “no.” Panel 2: the little dog grabs the first man’s hand with his paw and gives the back of his hand a sensual smooch. Panel 3: the man pulls his hand back in disgust.

I've been reading a bit of stuff that indicates they're certainly internally using people's private files and texts as well. These companies have no respect for your data. Plus the cost of what they're doing is astronomical and people won't pay that.

A post that reads "patriarchy is when 'i have a boyfriend' stops a man faster than 'no'. When an invisible man gets more respect than the woman standing right there'.

And someone retweets with the caption " This point is further reinforced by the fact that responding I'm a lesbian" does not deter them at all. That's when they start saving shit like "you only think that because you've never been with a man like me""
