Well seeing where GH is headed I think that I'll take the current process and not modernize 😅

I can finally talk about this, 3 years later... github.com/tailscale/ta... It's a library + CLI tool that's like netcat, but over Tailscale's data plane without any control plane (no accounts, no dependence on Tailscale the company, all open source) WireGuard + NAT traversal without IP addresses.

The thing is, it's what every sensible person is doing. They want flink, I know the problem space (just other stack)? Flink it is. This is basic stuff and you are up against stuffed and made up CVs and fake experience (I've had to work with a few such hires, holy ****).

We are converting part of our small (rather tiny, Europe) backyard to a wildflower garden and I'm so glad our neighbors are sensible humans. We don't have much space to work with. Now that I think of it, I might make a first attempt in late summer. Gardener said its not worth it before spring, eeh.

Look what just arrived, Observability Engineering (2nd) is absolutely huge. @charity.wtf you were not joking. Time to borrow a few columnar ideas for my winter project. #observability
A book on a wooden desktop. The second edition of "Observability Engineering" with a cover featuring a fox (?). The book itself is quite thick at around 600 pages.

I'll check it out for sure, I was justthinking about simple ways of standing up very rudimentary runners from basic building blocks.

I don't know how much this helps but maybe walking back from building in docker and going for #incus / lxc builders (start-up near instant) and cloud-init'ing / mounting SDKs is one way to get simple throwaway CI infra without the usual docker in docker pitfalls?

My guess is, you don't want to advertise it to everyone - just to the right people (the ones you need and are not already at the company). And that's not something to wave in the face of your current employees not at that level either.

/3 But poor engineers take shortcuts at the things they have not mastered. And orgs with weak technical leadership know one language - Gartner report, "ship faster", "we don't need X devs anymore". A friend told me about his CEO vibing something in a language they don't use. Now an ops problem. Sigh

/2 If I had to make one point - no one should be scaffolding test suites with a parrot trained on awful data. The average dev can't write effective tests for shit. Let alone #TDD. I know how bad frontier models are at "reasoning" and proving correctness. Write good tests upfront, let LLMs fill gaps

This is one of my favorite reads on the topic, I'm making a small collection to hand off to people which don't get nuance. My current field of work is platform eng for enterprise orgs which do software as if it was a hobby. Poor discipline, poor results. And downstream we get many of the negatives.

Paperback preordered, I could even pre-order from Germany. I'm not sure I can wait until August though, might as well grab as download to read on the go. Too many copies? 😂 But first to finish a few chapters from the first edition. 🥂

Hey yeah sorry, I was a bit stuck spent some time parsing profiles, and with otel having an alpha definition I was hoping that's a topic. Wrt store/ingest they ended up fitting just right in the baby retriever 🦮. The hard part is adding useful attributes, thread context is still up in the air (otel)

It really does feel like GitHub is getting worse by the day. Now I regularly get bogus "invalid value" label errors when the label clearly exists and works.

I sometimes want to use my yubikey as a second factor / security key (U2F). It seems that everyone is rolling out passkeys and I have to temp disable modes on my yubi. I also use passkeys too, and like them. So I have a problem mostly with the implementation and rollout.

With the risk of delaying the second edition even more 😂 have you also added some deeper dives on (OTLP) profiles? Landed in alpha just recently so I am wondering whether there was anything particularly tricky eg ingest? I've been pondering over the wire format and the storage footprint looks small

I need to watch the presentation, so excuse me if this was addressed. After looking into the profiles format I am not sure what backing store will do a good job of ingesting these at reasonable scale. TSDBs are out, are we looking at wide col DBs as generic solutions? Plus vendor specific solutions?

The only good thing about all this is that it has brought to my attention that the Greenland flag frickin’ rules. #Erfalasorput
The flag of Greenland. The bottom half is red and the top half white, and offset from the center there is a circular design with the bottom half of the circle white and the top half red. It is meant to symbolize ice caps and the sun setting over the ocean.

Where is the pressure to host on Substack coming from? Just curious, wouldn't some platform like Ghost be great for writing? It seems to support the usual features people want or expect too (membership). Hell it even looks better and more transparent wrt billing.

And generally naming things in go feels vastly different (better) than most OOP languages. r.keys.Get(id) instead of this.KeyService.GetKey() etc. And the focus in general is on the flow when reading. Extensions methods are great and overused, I wouldn't focus on them wrt good language design.

Methods only hide the first parameter (receiver) anyway. What I'm trying to say is, when I declare a method with a receiver, there is no notion of this or self. In c# this happens in the class context, so 'this' makes sense. Not arguing just a diff explanation to "too generic, bad practice".
100
Boris M @bmarinov.bsky.social · 07/12/2025
If you cant define a good name it's okay to simply use 'r' (abbreviated receiver). There is no this, neither a self in this context. Receiver funcs don't live in the context of the struct. Definition is on the package level. Using the Java/Python convention is factually incorrect here. #go

Yes it exists, this was my point (bs reply char limit). I get that it sounds. A few questions: Where should the "text grabs" end, do you need eg to paste into email on your phone? And how can a third party make sure that you aren't secretly grabbing text off their phone screen? Just a few thoughts

Boris M @bmarinov.bsky.social · 28/11/2025
Yeah, definitely! Only if something like optical recognition of characters existed.. We would then only need a hand held camera running an operating system capable of executing applications. But getting ads beamed right into my eye socket while I drive or walk around would do as well 😊
